Richard Mullen Obituary

MULLEN, Richard Allen 77, formerly of Waltham, died at his home in Onset on September 18, 2009, in the loving care of his family. During the Korean War, Richard served proudly in the newly-formed U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller. Afterwards, he took great pride in his calling as a community banker at Waltham Savings Bank (later Sterling Bank). He was a graduate of the Brown University Graduate School of Savings Banking. He extended his service to the community through many local organizations, including the Waltham Jaycees, the Waltham Chamber of Commerce, the Charles River Museum of Industry, and the Waltham YMCA. After moving to Onset, he volunteered wholeheartedly at St. Mary's as an usher/greeter and as a member of the Finance Committee. Richard was a loving husband and father, a true guide and the closest of friends to his family, including many of his nieces and nephews. He is survived by Beverly, his wife of 58 years. He is also survived by three of his children: his daughter Lenore and her husband, John Walker, now of Fort Worth, Texas, and their children, Elizabeth and her husband, David Escobar, John and Sara, together with two great-granddaughters, Emma and Rebecca Walker; his son Chet, and his wife Janese (Landry), now of Kent, Washington, and their children, Steven and Jennifer; and his daughter Paula and her husband, Robert G. Logan, of Waltham, and their children, Robert, Mary, Ross and Patricia. Also surviving are his grandsons Nick and Jake Mullen of Fort Worth, Texas, whose father, James, died in 2001. Dick "never met a stranger." He treated everyone with great respect and kindness. He leaves behind many dear friends. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, you would honor his memory by an act of kindness toward a stranger or a donation to Southcoast Hospice & Palliative Care, 200 Mill Road, Suite 120, Fairhaven, MA 02719 or your favorite charity. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, September 23rd at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham from 5-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Onset Ave., Onset at 10:00 AM. Interment at Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne will be private. For directions and on-lineguestbookvisit: www.ccgfuneralhome.com Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home Wareham (508) 295-0060

It is with deep sorrow that I have heard of Richard Mullen’s being called home to our heavenly Father.
I know that he is in the presence of Almighty God and surrounded by Our Blessed Mother, and all the angels and saints because he was a devoted and spiritual person who lived His faith with charity, compassion and was always concerned for those who were amoung the needy.
Richard was a reliable, responsible friend to all and his humor and friendship will be missed.
I am offering a Mass of Resurrection for him since I will be having some surgery on Wednesday and not able to attend either the wake or funeral.
My prayers are also with his devoted wife Bev and his children as I know they will most certainly feel the loss greatly.
May his soul and the soul of all the faithful departed rest in eternal peace.

Dear Bev and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Richard's death. Thank you for letting me know. He and I had some interesting experiences as we tried to help Mary and even more after her death. My favorite quote is from the poem "Ulysses". It is "I am a part of all that I have met" Richard taught me much and my meeting him has added to who I am. God bless and comfort you.

Dear Beverly and Family,
Weve only known Richard for a short time but he was a very kind man and welcomed anyone into his home. Weve shared a lot of laughter with Richard with our Bay Pointe Cook Outs and yes his Chili which everyone loved.
Our prayers are with you and your children.
With love,
Charlie and Joan Lane
