ROBERT J. "BOB" GRAY

1927 - 2023

GRAY, Robert J. "Bob" Of Roslindale, MA, passed away on March 6, 2023, at age 95, surrounded by family. Born in Poznan, Poland, July 8, 1927, Bob's given name was Romuald Wladyslaw Wincente Kaczmarek. He survived Nazi and Soviet occupations of Poland, escaped to Sweden in 1947, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952, and became a U.S. citizen in 1953. Bob worked for 33 years as an illustrator for Bell Telephone Laboratories (NY/NJ), where he created artist renderings of engineering plans, primarily for the Transatlantic Cable division. He also invented and patented a navigational tool called Gray's Course Computer. For over 80 years, Bob dedicated his life to being a fine artist. His works include drawings, sculpture, and paintings in watercolor, egg tempera, and oils. After retiring from Bell Labs in 1986, he focused on oil portraits but also did seascapes, landscapes, and religious-themed paintings. He exhibited his work in galleries and shows in MA, NJ, and NY. In 1959, he received the Bainbridge Award for watercolor painting from the Allied Artists of America. A selection of his artwork can be viewed at http://bobgrayarts.wixsite.com/home. Bob was an exceptionally loving husband and father. He is survived by his daughter, Lorraine L. Gray, and her partner, Mary Abigail Peck, of Roslindale; his nieces and their families; and dear friends in NJ, PA, and MA. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Suzanne E. Gray (Leavery); his mother, Melania Stanika; and his father, Wincenty Kaczmarek. He will be deeply missed. A private service was held by the family at Mt. Auburn Cemetery on March 11, 2023.
