Allen Bertelsen Obituary

Allen V. Bertelsen, 69, of Bozeman, passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 29, 2009. He was born Nov. 13, 1939, in Froid, a son to Verner L. and Ellen (Bentsen) Bertelsen. His mom passed away a couple of days after he was born. He was raised and educated in Ovando, until the eighth grade when he had to move away from the farm to attend high school in Deer Lodge.

At the age of 16 he enrolled at The University of Missoula. After two years of college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Army intelligence in Paris, France, until he was honorably discharged a few years later.

Before he left for the military he met the love of his life, Janet Rae, on a blind date. Al and Janet were married Dec. 17, 1960, in Butte. She was the force behind Al for 49 years. Together they raised three beautiful children.

Al graduated MSU in 1963 with a degree in general studies, with minors in history and French. He accepted a teaching position where he taught social studies in Whittier, Calif., for two years.

Al loved Bozeman and MSU and was lured back by the Bridger Mountains in 1965. He was the activities and building supervisor for the Strand Student Union Building until 1974, when he became the SUB’s third director. He retired in September 2008 as the director of the Strand Union after more than 43 years of service to Montana State University. He will be remembered as “Mr. SUB” by the students and employees he mentored over the years.

Al will be remembered for his easy-going, positive attitude and constant smile. He touched so many lives and was known by many names both by his family and friends: Mr. SUB, Father Bear, Papa, FIL (Father-in-Law), Daddy Bear, Grandpa Al, Al-ly, Big Al, Mr. Bear, Big Guy and Mr. Bungee. He was great at teasing his kids and grandkids and had a knack for adding humor to all situations.

Al loved Bozeman and he became firmly woven into the fabric of the Bozeman community. He served a vast array of local organizations: the Montana Advocacy Program; Montana Gold – honored on statewide television; member and management team of the Montana Special Olympics and director of the Special Olympics winter games; president of the Chamber of Commerce Green Coats in 1986; member of the board of directors for Gallatin Hospice; chairman for the Montana State Mental Disabilities Board of Visitors; chairman of the board of trustees for Bozeman Public Schools; Big Sky Ski Patrol; Bridger Bowl Ski Patrol; member and board of directors for Legislative Action Program for Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health and Special Education; member and search committee for executive vice president for Chamber of Commerce; moderator for Pilgrim Congregational Church; board of directors for the Sourdough Fire Department; member of the board of directors for Little Gal’s softball; chairman of dance and carnival for Montana Special Olympics; member of and on the executive board for MSU Alumni; member and on the advisory committee on special education regulations, Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the state of Montana; board of directors for Reach Inc; president for the Montana Associations for Retarded Citizens; chairman of the board of directors for Pilgrim Congregational preschool program; received an honorary membership in the Montana Association for the Blind; member of the board of directors and president of the Bozeman Noon Rotary Club; institution representative for Pack 675 Cub Scouts BSA; member of and on the board of directors for Thrift Station Inc; senior vice president for Montana Association for Retarded Children and Adults; president of the Gallatin Association for Retarded Children, board member of Region IV-Developmental Disabilities Services Association; Bozeman Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Guy Sperry Award; liaison with MSU for the Wally Byam Caravan Club International Committee; vice president of Bozeman Jaycees, Montana Board of Visitors program; member of Montana Advocacy Program; served on the board for Eagle Mount from 1993-2000; served on Bridger Bowl board of directors from 1994-2000; Montana Special Olympics Family of the Year 1993; Bozeman Special Olympics Family of the Year 1994; coach for the Montana Special Olympics team at the National Special Olympics held in New Haven, Conn., in 1995.

Al’s wife, Jan, willingly supported her husband’s services to the community, knowing that all Al gave to the community came back to them in return.

Al loved to ski, enjoyed big game hunting and was a serious Bobcat fan, when he wasn’t helping in the community. His great joy in life was his family.

Survivors include his father, Verner Bertelsen of Helena; his wife, Janet of Bozeman; son, Mark (Lisa) Bertelsen of Yakima, Wash.; two daughters, Beth (Sandy) Bertelsen-Putirka of San Diego, Calif., and Julie Bertelsen of Bozeman; two grandsons, Brandon and James; one granddaughter, Jamie; his sister, Annette Gallup of Boulder, Colo.; brother, Dave (Karen) Bertelsen of Wibaux; many nieces and nephews; and his sister-in-law, Elsie Rae of Missoula.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen; and his grandson, Conner.

Al was a big guy with a big heart. He touched so many lives. He will be dearly missed by all.

A celebration of Al’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at Hope Lutheran Church (the new location on South 19th).

Memorials may be made in his name to Eagle Mount, Reach Inc, Montana Special Olympics, or to Pilgrim Congregational Church.

I am so sorry to hear of your recent loss to your family. Whenever I saw Al around town he would always stop and visit me and whoever I was with as if we were old friends. What a great loss to the whole community. If only there were more people like him out there. It is funny to me that he had so many nicknames, somehow when I played basketball with Beth, I got the nickname of Ding. Beth your dad still called me Ding after all these years. It always made me smile. He is the only one that still called me that. anway, I just wanted you all to know that I am really sorry for your loss and I am thinking of you all at this time. God Bless.

My Lisa still remembers Al Bean fondly even though she has not seen him in 20 years. This testifies to his warm and wonderful personality. He will be missed by many. I always tried to emulate him, but have always come up short. I regret I cannot rearrange my schedule to get to his celebration Saturday. I wish I could offer the family some helpful wisdom, but I have none. It is not true that time heals all ills, but it does allow one to accept the facts. My prayers to the whole family.

Jan, Mark, Beth, Julie and Family,

Al was such a great guy. I remember growing up in the old neighborhood and always seeing him around. He always had something nice to say. Your family was a blessing to our neighborhood and we all had a lot of good times.
I know that you will all miss him so much but like John said you wil not be alone. There are many people who feel the sadness of your loss.
The SUB just doesn't seem the same without Al and I doubt that it ever will. Al was in inspriation and a person with a heart of gold. All that he did for everyone in this community and others will be remembered forever.
My heart is filled with sadness at your loss and your entire family will stay in my thoughts and prayers. Al will live in many of our hearts forever. God Bless.

Al was a mentor and a friend. I knew him when he first worked at the Sub with Bob Hornsburger, skied with him at Bridger. hunted with him with my Uncle Jim Mitchell, and he was always there to give great advice as I worked my way thru school. I always enjoyed stopping by the Sub over the years to see how things have changed. The one thing that was consistent was Al's smile and a warm welcome. My Mom, Zona Mitchell, and I will pray for Al and for his family. God Bless Terry

My sincere condolances to the Bertelsen family. Al was one of the most giving people I have known. Al provided me an opportunity with an internship at the Strand Union back in 1987-88 to build some job experience. AS a blind individual, this meant a lot to me at a time when I was trying to get a job and making my own way in this world. I will always remember Al and appreciate him for what he done for me at that time in my life.

Al will be missed by many.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Allen Bertelsen Family at the loss of Al. Mark, Andrea and I have grown fond of Al as we remember him very well at the Montana Special Olympics gatherings. Andrea will always appreciate his willing heart to help transport her with the MSU Bobcat group to and from Special Olympic competitions. His smiling face will be sorely missed at Special Olympic gatherings. May you all find peace and comfort in these days ahead with family and friends as you remember Al. Our family will certainly have etched in our minds the kindness, generousity, unselfish attitude of this fine man. God will have such a great servant amongst his angels up there in Heaven with him. God comfort you all these days ahead. Sincerely, Mark and Pat Kossler, Becky, ANDREA and Jenny Kossler formerly of Clyde Park and Gallatin Gateway, MT

Dear Jan, Beth, Mark, Julie, and extended family--

My heart goes out to all of you, for I know from experience that Al was a wonderful positive force in your family and the community. I have always felt extremely fortunate to have spent so much time with your family back in my high school years, and Al's presence played a big part in my feeling that way. His sense of humor and deep compassion for other humans made him stand out from so many others. I know you will miss Papa Bear, but you will not be alone: many of us will think of our memories of him and keep his spirit alive. Al will not be forgotten because he gave so much in the way he lived. My family will be thinking of yours during this difficult time.

Love,

Dear Jan and Family it has been a long time since we worked for the "Big Guy" at the SUB (1972 and 1973). The years Debbie and I spent in Bozeman going to school and working for Al were very special. He was a great boss. Al is a big part of our fond memories of Bozeman and the SUB. I worked the in Gameroom and with Al's help we also started and ran a successful poster shop. His vision and help were invaluable to the success we had. My son later attended and graduated from MSU and new Al also. Our condolances and prayers to you and yours in this difficult time. What a guy!!!! Skip and Debbie Clark

We are so sorry to hear of Al's passing. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family. I remember working with Al in the SUB game room back in the early 60's. What a great person he was to work with and know. And then my son and daughter in law, Rob and Heidi worked for him at the Ask us desk in the 90's. They spoke of him often and Al always ask about them. He will truely be missed.

Dear Jan and Family;

I served as Assistant Superintendent of the Bozeman Schools while Al was Board Chair. He was a great Board Chair and a wonderful person. I have such fond memories of my service with Al. I was so sorry to hear of his passing.
Peace be with you.

Dear Jan and family,

Your loss of Al is deeply felt and I extend this message of heartfelt sympathy and support to you and your family. Al was such a dear friend and clearly a huge part of Bozeman. Countless are the times I spoke with him when I attended MSU and his smile and encouragement always meant so much to me. Since then, the many times our paths crossed, it was more like that of an extended family meeting. More recently, whenever I would take my Mom for a drive around Gardner Park, she would always want to stop to visit with you, Al, and Julie. You truly are an important part of our family and your loss is very much a shared loss, one deeply felt. My heart goes out to you and your family along with great love and most sincere sympathy.
