Charles Kelly Obituary

Charles Edward Kelly was born on July 13, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas. The family moved to Bozeman, where he attended second grade at Emerson school until moving to a ranch near Cameron, Mont.

Charles attended school in Ennis until sophomore year. He graduated from St. Johns Military Academy in Wisconsin, after which he went on to college at Montana State University, where he obtained a bachelor's degree 1971.

He earned his master's and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology, Berkeley, Calif. He performed a two-year internship at the Pyramid Alternatives in Pacifica, Calif., and proceeded to establish a private practice in Walnut Creek, Calif., in 1980.

He continued in his private practice until 1990, at which time he returned to Bozeman and established a private practice, which he continued until present. In 1999 he was nominated as a diplomat of the American Board of the Psychological Specialties in Clinical Psychology for the American College of Forensic Examiners. During that time, he served on the board of directors of the Montana Friends of Jung.

Charles started a dream group in 1992 consisting of local psychological practitioners and professionals that continued to the present. He served with the CAP program locally from the mid 1990s to the present. He served as the president of the Montana Psychological Association from 2004-2006.

The main element of Charles' practice was working with children. All who knew Charles developed a deep respect for his ability to work with children.

In his younger years, Charles was a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association participating in the roping events. He also attended school at MSU on a skiing scholarship. As a result of his skiing success at MSU, he was selected to serve as a skiing instructor in Switzerland.

While in Europe he was filmed as a stunt man for the movie "Snow Job" with Jean-Claude Killy. He was an outstanding athlete and excelled in numerous athletic activities throughout his life, including the rodeo arena, golf and world-class skiing

Growing up on the Upper Wall Creek Ranch, Charles developed an intense identification and relationship with the environment and physical elements of the ranch. He spent a great deal of time not only working, but also exploring all of the areas, which led to a strong identification of the spiritual relationships abundant in that environment.

He used that experience throughout his life as a source of therapeutic stress relief and support for important decision-making. No one that new Charles and his special relationship with that environment could ever think of them separately, as they were one.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Amelia C. Kelly, and two adoring children, Jocelyn A. Kelly and Geneva S. Kelly, all of whom reside in Bozeman. Also, he is also survived by his parents, Andrew and Susanna Kelly, who live on a ranch in Cameron, Mont.; a brother, Andrew Kelly Jr. and his wife Sue; his nephews, Nick and Ryan; his nieces, Elizabeth and Annie of Atlanta, Ga.; and his sister, Suzie Kelly, who resides in Bozeman.

Additionally, he is survived by numerous close friends that comprise a large extended family. Charles will be greatly missed by family and friends as well as by every person that ever met him and was touched by his kindness and humility.

Cremation will take place on Monday, April 7. A public memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bozeman Deaconess Hospice or the Bozeman Symphony.

A private celebration of his life will take place on his family's ranch in Cameron this summer.

It is with great sadness that I bid farewell to Charles, a fellow human being of the greatest caliber. While I didn’t have the pleasure of getting to know him very closely, I had many occasions to interact with him, mostly within musical contexts. To me, Charles seemed an incredibly devoted father whose support for his daughter Josie was impressive and endearing (I have never gotten to know Geneva, but I am sure that she has always been equally warmly loved by her father). I have had the pleasure of working with Josie on a number of occasions, as a teacher at the university, in the Summer Youth Orchestra Workshop, the Bozeman Symphony, and on a number of other occasions, and I was always struck by Charles’ love and support for her and for her musical endeavors. Charles never missed an opportunity to compliment my own daughter Sara, who, like Josie, is a cellist and a classmate of Josie’s.

I am unable to attend Charles’ memorial service, but send my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. In my mind, Charles Kelly was an extraordinary person, and I consider myself fortunate to have know him.

Sincerely,

Johan Jonsson

Where to start? I want to shout out, put out all the lights, turn off all the tvs, no more driving, he's left us. I write this in tears. To Chuck's family, know that his love for you all taught me so much about what loving means. I am so thankful for the two and a half years work we had before he got sick and for what he shared with me, his true self so I could find mine. He is one of the most magical people I have ever met and I shall never forget him and what he taught me. My thoughts are with you.

Our family sends heartfelt love, prayers and sincere condolences to you. Dr. Kelly was an inspiration to all who were so incredibly blessed to know him. He had very special gifts of insightful guidance, quiet and amazing wisdom, caring, compassion and inner strength. What a guy he was! My heart breaks, right along with yours. I hope I see him in my dreams. He was the Dream King, a wonderful therapist. He helped me get over the death of a best friend, and to heal with a partner. I wish healing to his family, the kind he gave.

Life is, indeed, a mystery and Charles helped and guided me to unfold the mystery of myself and of our larger existence in this short time we manifest in human form on this Earth. I am forever grateful to him.
His presence, insight into my turmoil, and his ability to call me on the mat was a gift. I never left his office without an Ah-ha momemt. From the day I called him a year and half ago and made an appointmment to come see him, but never made it to because of his illness, was the last I heard his voice. But the image I have of him sitting back in his big, green chair listening to me will be everlasting.
His family, and all those who crossed paths with him were fortunate to be in the presence of an enlightened person/therapist/ husband/ father/son.
May his journey encounter no obstacles. Blessings and gratitude.

I feel very blessed to have known Dr. Kelly. He was a teacher, mentor, and guide for my career path. As I continue my doctoral work in clinical psychology, and after I've received my degree and begin to work in ernest, his patience and wisdom will be in my memory as continuing reminders of the type of therapist I want to be. Thanks for touching my life, and the lives of so many others. You will be missed, but not forgotten. My most sincere condolences go out to your family.
