I was older than the Merle clan growing up on Covington so I was often a babysitter. What I remember most was that everything, and I mean everything, was labeled RM... coats, boots, toys... It's always been a lesson to me in what's important- your Mom spent her time on the things more important to her- her kids- and didn't sweat the small stuff.

I can only say that my sister Alison said it beautifully! Mrs. Merle was my second mother, my best friend's mother, the woman who put mercurochrome on my cuts & praised me when I didn't scream, who I remembered when I nursed my newborn to "use the safety pin" trick, and who did make truly phenomenal sweet rolls! She was a wonderful mother, had a terrific laugh, great sense of humor & loved without reserve. It helps to know she's reunited with her one true love, her husband, who I also deeply cared for...my love and prayers to all of you kids! You and your folks are part of who I am today. So many memories. I still feel bad about slamming the car door on your fingers, Becky! But your Mom never made me feel terrible - she knew I didn't mean it. Oh my, that's a memory! I'm glad I got a chance to say "Thank you" to your Mom for all she meant to me. God bless you all. With deepest sympathies & much love, Liz Kilmer Batz

I grew up in a house next to the Merle Family when they lived in Irondequoit. We had a gang in my family and so did they. I was closest in age with Rene and Russell and Randall and we played together all the time: stickball, flashlight tag, Simon Says, kickball, foursquare, jump rope. We ran and laughed and played and went to the same school and church.
I recall going to Midnight Mass one year, just us kids old enough to walk to church after dark, my older sisters providing oversight for our energies. (Remember how beautiful it was? Fresh snow and houses with Christmas lights on the bushes and shrubs, glowing in the dark, walking down the streets - Kathe kept yelling at us to get on the sidewalks!) I find many of my dearest memories caught up with Robert and Rose Merle's kids.
Behind all this childhood was our Mothers: strong, loving and faithful to our church, dedicated to making us wild children into sober and responsible adults. I knew when Mrs. Merle spoke, it was in the voice of my own Mother, who thought the world of Rose, a caring, loving, strong woman.
Mrs. Merle was always kind to me, treated me as one of her own and I know some of the light in my life came from her. To paraphrase a book title: it took a street and neighbors to raise a child. Thank God for such neighbors as Rose Merle.
With the recent death of my own Mother, I am moved to say that these remarkable women created a wonderful world for us to grow up. My thoughts are with you all.

To all the family: Her long Lent ended on Ash Wednesday! May the glory of the Risen Lord, which she now shares, give you hope and comfort. It's a blessing to have known her.
With fond memories and love,
Father Chuck Slisz
