Douglas Mulac Obituary

Douglas L. Mulac

Colchester - Douglas L. Mulac, of Colchester, Vermont passed away on Jan 2, 2019 at the age of 87 after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Judith Mulac, son Dieter Mulac; (wife Jeanne) and daughter Erika Reynolds; (husband Tom Reynolds) and seven grandchildren: Devin, Justin, and Jordan Mulac; Claire, Katherine, Colin and Christopher Reynolds. He is also survived by his sister Susan Letourneau of Ormond Beach, Florida and Brother Vincent Mulac (wife Beth Barndt) of Jericho, Vermont.

Born on May 29, 1931 in Traverse City. Michigan, Doug moved to Vermont as a young child.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1950, and then joined the Navy during the Korean War. Upon his return, Doug became a pilot in the VT Air National Guard while attending The University of Vermont. Doug remained in the Air Guard after graduation from UVM, and flew with the Guard for over 20 years earning the rank of Major. Doug flew several planes including the F86, F94, F89 and the F102.

Doug was chief engineer and plant manager of the GS Blodgett Co. Under his leadership, Blodgett was the first commercial oven manufacturer to introduce oven doors with vertical hinges. He later became a vice president at Hearthstone Stoves and after much research and a trip to Italy found a machine that could polish soapstone. This changed the appearance of the stoves and added to the beauty of the stone.

Doug enjoyed the VT way of life. He was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and hunter; a hands on kind of guy. Doug was innovative, calm in crisis and always prepared. He was very active in the National Ski Patrol at Smugglers Notch and Bolton Valley as a patroller and an examiner. In 1968 he received a Purple Star, the highest life saving award given by the NSP for saving the life of a hunter.

In 1995 Doug received a very successful heart transplant at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and returned to a healthy and active lifestyle. He served the Town of Colchester as a Lister and on the Fire District #2 Prudential Committee for many years.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 12, 11:00 am, at Corbin & Palmer, 9 Pleasant Street, Essex Junction, VT. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Elks Lodge on North Avenue in Burlington on Sunday, January 13 from 12 - 3 pm.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Colchester Technical Rescue, 781 Blakely Road, Colchester, VT 05446.
