Juliana J. Uram
Juliana J. "Julie" Uram, 87, of Washington, Pa., formerly of New York City and Butler, passed away peacefully Friday at the Washington Hospital after a brief illness. She had been living at Hawthorne Woods for the past eight months because of complications from Alzheimer's.
Julie was born March 11, 1925, in Butler, the daughter of Joseph and Julia Wojtyna Kondos.
She was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Julie was a registered nurse, having graduated from the Butler Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and eventually becoming an administrator at Butler Hospital.
Julie's accomplishments included receiving the Benjamin Rush Award from the Washington County Medical Society. She was the first woman campaign president of United Way of Washington County. She eventually conducted and led four Health-O-Ramas for the United Way. She was the first woman to be president of parish council for Immaculate Conception in Washington.
The highlight of her accomplishments were receiving the Anne Hanna Award with respect to her efforts regarding involvement in creating and maintaining the Medallion Ball held at Thanksgiving, a longtime tradition in Pittsburgh to benefit the Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind. Julie also received the Roy Gillispie Award through Washington's Rotary Club.
Julie was a member of numerous boards: Boy Scouts of American Trails Council, where she was the first woman member, the Greater Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind, president of St. Lucy's Auxiliary, Board of Regent of St. Vincent Seminary, president of the women's auxiliary at Washington & Jefferson College, president of Pittsburgh Symphony South, chairman of the Bishop's Annual Appeal, "Parish Share," the Washington County Community Foundation and the Washington Hospital Foundation.
As a dedicated Republican, she had been committee woman, co-chairman and chairman in Washington County. She was also active in the Republican State Committee for Washington County.
On June 14, 1947, in Butler, she married Andrew G. Uram, who survives. They joyfully celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. After marriage, she and Andy lived in New York City, Pleasant Hills and then settled in Washington.
Survivors include Andrew, her devoted mate for 65 years; five sons, James Michael Uram of Washington, Andrew Paul (Donna) Uram of Absecon, N.J., Thomas J. (Lynn) Uram of Eighty Four, Matthew G. (Jodi) Uram of Washington and Patrick J. Uram (the late Gary Prestigiacomo) of Washington; and her only sibling, Paul (Bonnie) Kondos of Butler.
