John Gerard Jolly, 76, of Glen Rock, PA, previously a 20 year resident of Severna Park, died peacefully at home on May 28th, after a brave struggle with cancer. The son of John Gerard Jolly, Sr., and his wife Annamae, Mr. Jolly was born in 1934 in Brooklyn, NY. He served in the U. S. Army from 1954 to 1956 and then worked at the Brooklyn Naval Yard while attending St. John's University in Queens, NY. After graduating from St. John's in 1958, he moved to Washington, DC to take a position as a cryptologist with the National Security Agency. During a career which spanned 36 years he rose through a variety of technical and management positions, retiring as a Senior Executive in 1994. He was a charter member of the Senior Cryptologic Executive Service and a recipient of both the Meritorious and Exceptional Civilian Service Awards. He was a 1990 recipient of the Presidential Rank Award from then President George H. W. Bush. He was very active in Optimist International, serving as an officer of clubs in both Maryland and Pennsylvania. As an avid golfer and member of the Caledonia Clowns golf group he was known for his long backswing and dry wit. He also enjoyed bridge, chess, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Florence Jolly; three children, John S. Jolly of Highland; Anne M. Gustke of Bridgeport, NY, and Beth L. Jolly of Baltimore; seven grandchildren, Grace, Eleanor and Robert Gustke; Joy, Kirsten, Katrina and John G Jolly III. He is also survived by two sisters, Helen Staab of Lodi, NJ and Maryann Redican of Indian Trail, NC. The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, May 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St, New Freedom, PA. 17349 A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday June 1 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church (Historic Church) 315 N. Constitution Ave New Freedom, PA. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in New Freedom immediately following. Memorial donations may be made to the York Cancer Center 25 Monument Road, York PA 17403

I played lots of golf with John once he retired in 1994. He handled his diagnosis well and continued playing as long as possible. Wishing all your families peace.
