John Leventry Obituary

John Umbaugh Leventry, Jr., 85, of Edgewater, Maryland, passed away on Friday, August 19, 2022 in Annapolis, MD. John was born on September 25, 1936 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the son of John Umbaugh Leventry, Sr. and Helen Irene Young Leventry. At the age of 12, John's family relocated to Silver Spring, MD. After graduating from Montgomery Blair High School, Silver Spring, MD, and Montgomery Junior College in Maryland, John served in the United States Navy on CVS-36 Antietam. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, John worked in various offices in the Washington D.C. area. His last position was in the Senate for the Architect of the Capitol as the Office Manager for approximately 25 years. John was a dedicated volunteer and gave tirelessly of his time to numerous organizations, including his church, St James' in Lothian, MD, Historic London Town, and the South County Senior Center. He enjoyed spending time at the Amish Market and developed many close friendships with the Amish vendors over the years. John had a lifelong passion for trains and was an avid collector of Lionel trains. He also loved airstreams and vintage cars and enjoyed going to car shows with his brother and cousin. Anyone who knew John knew that his favorite meal was a cheeseburger and french fries and that he was a confirmed chocolate and sweets lover. John married his wife, Jeannette M. Brzozowsky, on October 16, 2010. They met at a Relay for Life event back in May 2009. They went out for coffee after the event ended and were married a year and a half later. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his brother, Frederick Roy Leventry, and sister-in-law, Elizabeth P. Leventry; two stepchildren and their spouses; one granddaughter; two nieces, one nephew, seven great nieces and nephews, and many cousins. Friends are invited to celebrate John's life with his family on Monday, August 29 from 4 pm until 7 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 10 at 1 pm at St. James' Parish, 5757 Solomons Island Rd., Lothian, MD 20711. Inurnment will immediately follow in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in John's name to St. James' Parish or Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Hwy., Pasadena, MD 21122. Online guestbook available at:

I remember Jackie (we called him uncle Jack because he was a lot older than me and my siblings).
He always asked me ( I was a kid) "How´s your Liver/lover?" I never knew which one he meant! He was always joking around! I´m so sad that he´s gone. I will never forget him.

I was deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. He had a sense of humor like no other. He loved to play jokes/tricks on you. When I was taking classes at the South County Senior Center he would pop his head into the room and kid me about something. He was always pleasant and humorous. My heart goes out to Jeannette and the other family members. May God bless them in their time of grief.
