Joseph Tippett Obituary

Joseph "Joe" L. Tippett, Jr., 79, an 11-year resident of Edgewater, formerly of Silver Spring, died suddenly on Sept. 1 of a cerebral hemorrhage in Ocean City.

Born on Nov. 18, 1929 in Washington, D.C., he graduated from McKinley Technology High School. He was employed for 45 years with Bell Atlantic as a staff manager in the traffic engineering division until retirement in 1989.

He was president of the Blue Water East Condo Association in Ocean City. A 20 year member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and volunteered with the workshop for the blind and handicapped. Mr. Tippett was an active member and volunteer at Out Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Edgewater. He was a member and warden of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1384.

His hobbies included model making, collecting model trains, electronics, being a handyman/"Mr. Fix it", spending time in Ocean City and travelling with his wife.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Joyce (Joy) Gerkens.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean; two sons, Joseph (Jay) L. of Potomac Falls, Va. and Gerard (Jerry) K. of Laurel; two daughters, Jody Franklin of Columbia and Janice of Edgewater; two brothers and four sisters; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3 at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater. MD 21037 Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.

Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Rd, Edgewater MD 21037 or Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 236, Edgewater, MD 21037.
