Grace Beardsley Obituary

Beardsley, Grace C. Portland, OR (Formerly of Ann Arbor, MI) Grace C. Beardsley, nee Grace Elizabeth Cornog, histori cal textile anal yst and widow of University of Michigan anthropologist Prof. Richard K. Beardsley, has died. Ms. Beardsley, a 50 year resident and active member of the Ann Arbor community until moving to Portland, OR in 1999, died of pneumonia on November 30, 2003 after a brief illness under hospice care. She was 90 years old. Born near Sandy, OR in 1913 to Jacob Rodenbaugh Cornog and Emma Ripley Cornog, Grace Cornog grew up in Iowa City, IA with her brother, Robert. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1934 and a masters in decorative arts from the University of Chicago in 1936. She then taught at Russell Sage College in New York and at California's Stockton Junior College before entering the graduate anthropology program at UC Berkley. In April 1942, she married fellow anthropolo gy graduate student Richard K. Beardsley. Elizabeth, the first of their three children, was born in 1943. The Beardsley family set tled in Ann Arbor in 1947 and spent some years living and traveling abroad, largely in Japan, for Prof. Beardsley's ex tensive field trips and research. The couple acquired a fine collection of ethnic art on their travels. Ms. Beardsley had a keen interest in traditional, hand-woven textiles and, after her husband's death in 1978, be came recognized and an expert in weaving techniques and pat terns. Ms. Beardsley was also an accomplished watercolor artist and editor for most of her life. She is survived by her two daughters, Margaret Beardsley and Kelcey Beardsley, and son- in-law Joseph Johnson, all residing in Portland. Ms. Beardsley wanted to be remem bered through donations in her name to The Nature Conserva tory of Oregon, 821 SE 14th Ave., Portland, OR 97214-2537
