John "Jack" Dennis Page, Jr. CHARLESTON - John "Jack" Dennis Page, Jr., 96, of Charleston, South Carolina, died on Saturday, August 12, 2023. Jack was born March 3, 1927, in Birmingham, AL, son of the late John D. Page, Sr. and Julia Bartlett Bowers. He grew up in Panama City Beach, FL. At the age of 17 he entered the Navy during WWII where he served in an Underwater Demolitions Team (Frogman). Soon after the war he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Frances. Jack is predeceased by his wife of 74 years, Frances Jane Phillips, who he proposed to within a week of their meeting. The success of their long marriage is a testament to their faithfulness and selfless service to one another. He resided in Hampton, SC, from 1950-2016 at which time they moved to Charleston. He is also predeceased by his sisters, Lucy Wagner (Carl) and Julia Dolley (Steve). Jack graduated from Dell School of Medical Technology and was employed by Hampton General Hospital where he was employed for 36 years. While there he received the Exceptional Merit Award from the American Medical Technology (AMT) for outstanding service to the profession of Medical Technology and to the AMT organization. Jack had been employed at Hampton General Hospital as chief technologist for Lab and X-ray. Among other titles he held at the hospital were Risk Manager, Administrative Assistant and Emergency Room Coordinator. Jack also attended the Duke University Health Administrators Management Improvement Program. He was past President of South Carolina Society of AMTs. The South Carolina Secretary of State appointed him to the Advisory Board for Licensing and Regulation of Medical Laboratories in SC. He won national AMT honors, a President's Letter of Commendation and the Distinguished Achievement Award. Jack was project coordinator for the Hampton County Health Foundation computer system. The SC Department of Health and Environmental Control commended the hospital for Jack's record of anesthesia administration (he had 7,854 anesthesia procedures without incident). After retiring from the hospital, Jack worked as a Correctional Officer for the Allendale Correctional Institute where he performed several different jobs including Fire and Safety Director and Food Service Supervisor. Jack was an active blood donor in Hampton County, donating well over 100 pints of blood. Jack was a member of the American Legion and a board member of the local Jaycees. Jack served on the Hampton Town Council for 12 years (1964-1976). He was one of the founders of Higher Ground Christian Fellowship (Lighthouse Church) and a former deacon. Jack is survived by his three sons, John Dennis Page, III (Peggy), Scott (Susan) and Perry (Roz). 10 Grandchildren that he loved dearly: Scotty, John (Katie), Freddie (Jennifer), Chris (Tammy), Joshua (Janet), Andrew (Staci), Sandy Lesley (Jason), Sharon Hough (Ben), Julia Fain and Matthew (Amelia) and 31 Great-grandchildren who affectionately called him "Papa Jack" and several cousins, nephews and nieces. He was like a father to John & Spencer Mckenzie and Marty Hynson. He attributed his long life to staying active and eating whatever he wanted, especially steak and ice cream. He had a strong relationship with Jesus that influenced many people with his lifestyle of kindness and generosity. The memorial service will be held in Hampton at Lighthouse Church on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements are by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, SC.
