Edwin Jackson Obituary

Edwin Howe Jackson CHERAW - Edwin Howe Jackson, 82, of Cheraw, SC, died on Saturday, September 15, 2012, in Columbia, SC, following complications after heart surgery three weeks ago. Born on February 10, 1930, in Gastonia, NC, he was a son of the late Ennis Newton Jackson and the late Mary Kathleen Howe Jackson. He had two siblings who predeceased him: a brother, Robert Newton Jackson, and a sister, Nancy Elizabeth Jackson. After graduating from Darlington School, a boarding and college-preparatory school in Rome, GA, in 1949, he entered Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. His college career was interrupted by the outbreak of the Korean War. Mr. Jackson entered the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and served in both Korea and occupied Japan at Misawa Air Base. He was honorably discharged in 1953 with the rank of staff sergeant and the Korean Service Medal. He returned to Catawba College and graduated in 1956. That year, he began a 36-year-long career with Burlington Industries, Inc, starting as a trainee and retiring as a regional director of personnel. He served with Burlington Industries at several plants in the U.S. and Ireland. He married Margaret Eleanor Grant in 1958, who predeceased him in 1998. He married Ruth Kirkley Ingram in 2000. When he lived in Greensboro with Margaret, he was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and served on the Vestry. In Cheraw where he lived with Ruth, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served on the Session. When he and Margaret lived in Cheraw from 1961 to 1962, they became close friends with Ruth and her first husband, Miller Sloan Ingram, Sr., who died in 1982. Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife of 12 years, Ruth Ingram Jackson; his two daughters, Amy Jackson Jaynes (Jay) and Martha Jackson Pineiro (Luis); and his grandsons, Tanner Howe Jaynes, Jackson Antonio Pineiro, and Alexander Grant Pineiro. He is also survived by four step-children and their families: Miller Sloan Ingram, Jr. (Gail), Terry Ingram Gaillard (Cogburn), Ruth Ingram Sellars (Bruce), and Clayton Baker Ingram (Valerie). Mr. Jackson will be best remembered for his friendly, outgoing manner and his genuine love of people. Someone who "never met a stranger," he found it easy to talk to individuals from all walks of life. During his recent hospitalization, he made it a point to get to know every single person he met, even when he was in a great deal of discomfort and pain. His positive and cheerful demeanor remained with him until the end. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Jackson on Thursday, September 20, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Cheraw. A reception will be held after the service in the Fellowship Building. On Friday, September 21, 2012, following a 2:00 p.m. service at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro, NC, his ashes will be inurned in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the McArn Food Bank in Cheraw, SC. Donations can be mailed to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 552, Cheraw, SC 29520.

Ruth,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I am so glad that I was able to know Ed many years ago. He was a wonderful person and a dear friend of my father. Thinking of you at this time of sadness.

I am sending my condolences to the Jackson family. I had the pleasure of taking care of Mr. Jackson in the hospital. The first day I met him he was very high spirit. He was a nice kind man. He will be truly miss. It still hurt to know I took care of him Friday not knowing that would be my last day seeing him. Stay strong Mrs. Ruth god makes no mistake.
