Frank Collins Obituary

Frank Walton Collins, Jr. CHARLOTTE - Frank Collins, 87, died peacefully at home on September 14, 2014. A voracious reader, avid golfer, and aphorist, Frank's intellect and wit were fully engaged his entire life. Born in Macon, Georgia on November 1, 1926, he grew up in Atlanta where he graduated from Boys High School. Frank spent a year in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II and went on to graduate from Georgia Tech in 1949. He worked for more than 30 years with The Hartford Insurance Company, retiring in 1988, followed by years of golf and more golf. Starting his career with The Hartford in Augusta, Georgia, Frank played several tournaments in the amateur flights at the Masters. Later, he became a Masters' tournament official. When Frank was transferred to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he and his young family lived for ten years, he was known to play golf in the snow. In Charlotte, North Carolina, he was a charter member of Cedarwood Country Club, where he played golf until 2010. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Leonora (Lynn) Townsend Collins; his brother, F. Bennett Collins (Elizabeth); his children, Amelia Collins Price (Richard), Karen Courtney Collins, Frank (Tripp) W. Collins, III; his step-children, Jonathan Hadley and Amy Hadley Link (Bob); and two step-grandchildren, Rachel and Mary Katherine Kelly. He is also survived by devoted caregivers Delores Watson and Lena Arnold. A memorial service is planned for 2 pm on Saturday, September 20, 2014, in the Chapel of Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service.
