Margaret Little Coulter Obituary
Margaret Little Coulter, and Charles Pitts Coulter, after 68 years of marriage, have entered into eternity together.
Margaret Little Coulter, 86, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002 at Carolinas Medical Center after a month-long illness.
Charles Pitts Coulter, 86, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, also at Carolinas Medical Center.
Margaret was born Margaret Elaine Little in Claremont, NC on November 26, 1915. She was the second youngest of nine children of Edward Sanford Little (1865-1939) and Edna Mae Yount Little (1876-1945). Her siblings, all deceased, were Lorena Little Rowe (1897-1982), Annie Little Huitt (1899-1973), Robert Edward Little (1901-1986), Russell Ransom Little (1904-1974), George Delphine Little (1907-1983), Mabel Little Smyre (1909-1997), Joseph Daniel Little (1913-1966), and Ruby Jean Little Grannis (1920-1985).
Pitts was born in Claremont, NC on September 28, 1915. He was the youngest of four sons of Oscar Ligon Coulter (1879-1940) and Kayte Sigmon (1886-1977). His siblings, all deceased, were Jamie Elmer Coulter (1905-1958), Oscar Hugh Coulter (1907-1953), and John Philip Coulter (1911-1958).
Margaret and Pitts both attended the Claremont Schools. Margaret also attended Balls Creek School. Pitts attended Lenoir Rhyne College and Kings Business School. Margaret and Pitts were marred on November 11, 1933 and were married 68 years at the time of their deaths. They had lived in Charlotte since 1938 and were long-time members of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Pitts served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged following the war. Margaret worked for Associated Transport Co., and for the United States Civil Service during the war.
Before and following the war, Pitts worked for Cole Manufacturing Co. and later became Sales Manager for Powell Manufacturing Co. in Bennettsville, SC. He was a life-long member of the Riverside Masonic Lodge No. 606 in Catawba, NC, and a long-time member of the Myers Park Civitan Club of Charlotte. Pitts was a great supporter of youth activities, particularly athletics, in the Charlotte area.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Coulter Geller and husband, Edward Geller, of Mercer Island, WA; a son, Charles Pitts Coulter, Jr. and wife, Elizabeth Coulter, of Wilmington, NC; four grandchildren, Patrick and Joseph Coulter of Wilmington, NC, Anne Geller of Hood River, OR and Steven Geller and wife, Shirley Geller, of Seattle, WA; and a great granddaughter, Keili Elisabeth Geller of Seattle, WA.
Surviving nephews and nieces include Bill Coulter of Charlotte, Gail Coulter of Virginia Beach, VA, Joe Coulter of Charlotte, Johnny Coulter of Catawba, Ed Grannis, Jr. of Fayetteville, and Elizabeth Anne Smyre of Claremont.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday, May 4, 2002 by the Reverend J. A. Harbinson at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Claremont, NC. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends before the service at 1 PM in the church lounge.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Charlotte or Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Claremont, NC.
