Richard Cornwell Obituary

Richard Thomson Cornwell CHARLOTTE - Richard "Rich" Thomson Cornwell passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at his home on December 28, 2015. At the time of his passing, Rich was 40 years old. Rich was born in Charlotte, NC on April 16, 1975. He was the only son of the late Nancy Thomson Collins and Richard "Dick" Guy Cornwell. Rich had one child, Skylar Cornwell, born in 1999. Rich was a devout Duke Basketball fan with a deep hatred for anything Tarheel. Friends will remember March Madness was his favorite time of the year, especially when Duke made it to the final four. He attended high school at West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC. He graduated from East Carolina University in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in social work. Rich was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy, who passed away in 2011 from breast cancer. He is survived by his father, Dick Cornwell and his daughter, Skylar Cornwell. Rich is also survived by his step-father, Thomas "Tom" Elton Collins, his step-sister, Jennifer Andreas (Adam) and an extensive network of family and friends located throughout NC. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn West Cemetery located at 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte, NC. Visitation will follow the service. The service will be conducted by Rev Dr. Steve Lindsley of Trinity Presbyterian Church. The family request that memorial donations be made to: www.gofundme.com/richcornwell . Rich was like a son to me. I miss him and I know that he and Josh are in heaven arguing over Duke vs. Carolina...a natural past time for them.
