Samuel Jennings Asbury III

Samuel Asbury Obituary

Samuel Jennings Asbury, III
Mr. Asbury, a life-long resident of Charlotte went gallantly and with great dignity to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on May 9, 2008 after a glorious 87 years of life. In the final moments of his life, three prayers were answered: he died peacefully and without pain, he died a natural death, and his family was at his side cheering him on into Heaven. Sam died at Presbyterian Hospital, just a short distance from his place of birth at Mercy Hospital on May 31, 1920.
Sam is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Peggy Ann Owens Asbury; sons, Samuel J. 'Chip' Asbury, IV and wife, Mary and Richard Daryl Asbury and wife, Leslie; grandsons, Andrew J. Asbury and wife, Katie, Christopher A. Asbury, and Hayden T. Asbury; granddaughters, Hannah L. Asbury and Kathryn E. Asbury; and great-grandson, Tyler J. Asbury, all of Waxhaw, NC. Also surviving is cousin Ruth Rowland of Charlotte, NC.
Sam was a proud graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, class of 1939, and he attended college at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC and George Washington University in Washington, DC. Upon graduation, Sam went to work at the Charlotte Country Club as assistant manager, and in 1955 began a thirty year career with the American Schlafhorst Company.
Sam was a forty year member of Matthews United Methodist Church and was loved by all that ever met him. A recipient of the Boy Scout Silver Beaver Award, Sam was a most humble man, who always made it a point to pass on a compliment. He was a great dad and grandaddy who had a passion in life for his family, woodworking, golf, birds, crossword puzzles, and most trusted friend, his dog Ollie.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Heritage Funeral Home - Matthews/Weddington Chapel at 3700 Forest Lawn Drive in Matthews, NC on Sunday, May 11th. A service to commemorate his life will be held at Matthews United Methodist Church on Monday, May 12th at 11:00 am, officiated by Dr. Ken Lyon.
Memorial contributions may be made in Samuel J. Asbury's name to The Pastor's Discretionary Fund, Matthews United Methodist Church, 801 S. Trade Street. Matthews, NC 28105.

Peggy,
I was sorry to hear about your husband's death. I was going to contact you earlier, but did not get around to it. May God bless you in these difficult days.

I only got the chance to meet Sam once, as I went with my dad (Sam's doctor) to buy some of his woodworking tools. He was such a joy to be around and I could tell how much passion he had for woodworking. I hope you find peace knowing Sam is in a better place, and look back on what an impact he had on people. God Bless

Sam was my next-door neighbor for over 20 years, and my wife's for at least 10 years before that. We could not have asked for a better one, and we hope to see him again one day, to talk again in our backyards without the constraint of time.
