William Goodrum Obituary

William Banks Goodrum, died on may 27, 2003 at Huntersville Oaks. He was born July 27, 1920 in Huntersville, NC, to W. B. Goodrum and Lucy Harris Goodrum. After the death of his father and the disability of his mother when he was five years old, Mr. Goodrum lived with his uncle, Mr. Roy Goodrum, and his family. Mr. Goodrum married Elizabeth Puckett on October 9, 1941. She preceded him in death on February 29, 1972.
Mr. Goodrum served in the U.S. Army from April, 1943 through January, 1946, as a member of Company M, 134th Infantry Regiment. He saw combat in France.
As a life-long member of Gilead Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church in Huntersville, Mr. Goodrum served as a Deacon, Elder, Trustee and Church Treasurer. Upon retiring from Allison-Erwin Company in Charlotte, NC in 1981 after 31 years of service, Mr. Goodrum spent hours in a wood-working shop at his home on Lake Norman. Many of his crafts are enjoyed through the community as well as in the North Carolina mountains where he consigned some of his wood creations.
Survivors include daughters, Carolyn G. Hildreth and her husband, Michael C. Hildreth, of Charlotte, and Judith G. Caldwell and her husband, Tommy D. Caldwell, of Cornelius; three grandchildren, Matthew C. Hildreth and Kathryn E. Hildreth of Charlotte, and Trent D. Caldwell of Maiden, NC; and special extended family, Martha and Harold Kerns of Cornelius, NC, James and Shirley Goodrum of Stanley, NC and Bill and Cathleen Smith of Davidson, NC.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on May 29, 2003 in the Raymer Funeral Home Chapel, 16901 Old Statesville Road, Huntersville, NC with interment following at Gilead ARP Church Cemetery. Rev. J. E. Wayland, Jr. and Rev. Robert L. Hunter will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Huntersville Oaks/Brookwood for their quality care and concerned support, especially D Floor, in recent days.
Memorials may be made to Gilead ARP Church Cemetery Fund, 15303 Beatties Ford Road, Huntersville, NC 28078; Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina, Inc, 400 Flemington Drive, PO Box 121, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450; or a charity of the donor's choice.
Raymer Funeral Home of Huntersville is in charge of arrangements.
