Kathleen Gavin Obituary

Gavin (née Fay), Kathleen Marie

Kathleen Marie (Fay) Gavin of Palmyra, Virginia, lover of people, baseball, animals and gardening, formerly of Chicago and Alaska, passed away peacefully at the University of Virginia Hospital on the afternoon of Thursday, June 30, 2022, surrounded by her family.

She graduated from Providence High School in Chicago and attended the National College of Education for her teaching degree, then later in life decided to return to school at Triton College to get her nursing degree. Always a hard worker, and an enthusiastic traveler, she plucked up the courage to move away from her comfortable surroundings in Chicago to embark on the adventure of moving to and living in Juneau, Alaska.

The beloved mother of two children, Kathleen leaves behind her son, Jim Gavin with his wife, Jennifer Gavin, and her daughter, Molly Christensen. She was a devoted sister to Marybeth Earl of Palmyra, Va., and Richard Fay of Chicago, Ill., and was predeceased by her sister, Frances Baumann. Kathleen is also survived by four grandchildren, John P. Gavin and Connor J. Gavin of Midlothian, Va., and Tess F. Christensen and Trevor J. Christensen of Richmond, Va.; and was a favorite aunt of an extended family of 14 nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to share in a celebration of her life, to be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at the Lake Monticello Clubhouse, 41 Ashlawn Blvd., Palmyra, VA 22963.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fluvanna County SPCA at 5239 Union Mills Road, Troy, VA 22974, or to the American Indian Scholarship Fund in Kathleen's memory at https://engage.collegefund.org/page/22097/donate/1.

My condolences to the Gavin family, I worked as a CNA with Kathleen at UVA 5th floor. Kathleen was a wonderful nurse and a coworker. She will be missed by all who knew her. Kathleen had a big heart and a contagious smile. I´m thankful I had the opportunity to work with and to know this lovely lady.

A true friend who always reached out. A true Chicagoan with her love of the Cubs and Ernie Banks. Her family was her core. We met in high school and she was a fun girl who loved life and loved to laugh. My condolences to Molly and Jim and her family. She was a pretty good writer too. She wrote a funny piece on why she didn´t like Thanksgiving! I will miss her greatly.
