Ann Roth Obituary

Ann (née Rubel) Roth, 95, passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 26, 2017, in Miami, FL. Ann was a gracious and strong woman who embraced life, had many friends, and was loved and deeply respected in private and public spheres. Her family was the center of her very active, multi-faceted life. She grew up in Aberdeen, Mississippi, daughter to Julius & Anita. Ann's two brothers, the late Irving and Julius, were her loving and close companions for their entire lives. Ann attended Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans before moving to Chicago to complete her bachelor's at Northwestern University in 1943. In 1952, she married Don Roth, proprietor of the famous Blackhawk Restaurant. They moved to suburban Glencoe where she raised their family and continued to live until her death. Ann served on the Women's Board of Northwestern University and was a member of the Glencoe Garden Club. She was an active supporter of the Chicago Botanic Garden, Chicago Lyric Opera, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Ravinia Festival. She also was a voracious reader of books and newspapers, and faithfully attended current events classes and lectures. She remained an enthusiastic follower of Chicago sports teams. Survivors include her step-daughter Melissa (Frank) Bloch, sons Doug (Jennifer) Roth and Tom (Susana) Roth; grandchildren Julia Bloch, Sara (Chris) Jordan-Bloch, Jonathan Roth, Justin Roth and Daniel Roth; and great-grandson Felix Jordan-Bloch. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, and son, Roger. Memorial services for Ann will be held at Temple Am Shalom, 840 Vernon Avenue, Glencoe, IL on Thursday, December 21, at 11:00 a.m. If you wish to make a contribution in Ann's memory, please consider the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe, Ill. 60022, or Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, 910 Park Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10016.

Mrs. Roth was a lovely and gracious woman. As a young waiter at Don Roth's on Pearson, it was always a pleasure to encounter her and she was quick to engage the staff in conversation. My thoughts are with you, Doug, and your loved ones as you adjust to life without Ann. I know she'll be with you in a million ways forever. Condolences-

Ann was one of the bright lights of my growing up. She was a charming loving lady who always had time for a gawky teenage girl. I will miss her and will always remember her fondly.
