Dan Mastantuono

The Chicagoland culinary community lost Dan Mastantuono (aka Dan Mast) on Monday, Dec. 7, 2020. He was 88. A kind and happy man, Dan was the son of Italian immigrants who started a catering service and deli, D'Masti Catering, with his father Dan Sr. in the Chicagoland area. Dan was a typical family businessman, working with his children, Laura, Kathy, Mark, and Craig, and the extended D'Masti family to provide food and cheer at the most special occasions for thousands of families and businesses, from immigrant weddings in the 1950's-60's to feeding the papal entourage during John Paul II's historic visit to Chicago in 1979, to countless business and social engagements across Chicagoland to this day. A chef and baker, Dan was an artist who loved to create special food, always focusing on top quality above all else for more than 70 years in catering. As a businessman, he exemplified enduring optimism, hard work, and honesty. To Dan, nothing was more important than family, married to wife Margaret for 63 years until his death, and sharing a true devotion and love with her. Father of four, grandfather of four, and great-grandfather of two, Dan was happiest when gathered with family and friends at his and Margaret's home, sharing the best of food, music, and good company. His big heart failed him shortly after a short hospital stay. Services are private, and a celebration of Dan's life will be held when possible in 2021.
