Dave sailed through the world of music, adventure, and friendship with amazing prowess and a keen, dry wit. That was apparent In junior high school, in which he could jabber with the best of us 13-year-olds, but at that time he turned me on to the Shostakovitch 5th Symphony. Six years later, Dave and another musical friend of ours and I took a canoe trip on the Upper Namakogan River, knowing nothing about canoes and almost nothing about camping, but, what the hell? Why not? We did have to deal with the rifle-toting owner of the land we camped on, but Dave's easygoing charm provided all the balm we needed to complete the trip. (Well, almost--we left a day earlier than planned because we then-novices had had enough, but when we retreated to a local diner and heard Muzak on the sound system, we were ecstatic, having missed music of any kind for almost three days. That may hve been the only recorded example of Muzak-induced ecstasy in the whold world that year, but Dave needed music the way the rest of the human race needs oxygen. Thanks for creating so much of it at such a sophisticated level, Sam.

Dave was such a great guy! I am just hearing about his passing. I am so sorry. He came to Texas to work with our high school percussionists in 2005 and we had the privilege of being his driver and hosting him for the week. We just had the best time with him! RIP Dave. You were special!

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Samuels after a Spyro Gyra (Rites of Summer tour) concert. I was a high school kid studying mallets, and he was one of my idols as his playing was amazing. I remember being very nervous when getting to meet him, but he was very gracious. Later on, I wrote a letter to him later and he responded. I was blown away. RIP Dave Samuels, you we're one of a kind!!! Lance
