Edward Paloyan Obituary

Edward Paloyan, M.D. passed away on 10/13/2021 in Oak Brook, Illinois.

Edward Paloyan was born in Paris, France on March 19, 1932, in a Charity Hospital on Rue Amboise Pare to Missak and Takouhi Paloyan. The Paloyans were orphans who survived the Armenian Genocide of World War I. They were rescued by American Missionaries and brought to France. Ed had one brother, Daniel Paloyan of Glenview, Illinois who like Ed, is a University of Chicago Alumnus (BS, '60, MD, '64). In 1948 the Paloyans and their two sons migrated to the United States.

While living in France, Ed attended the Lyceé Condorcét in Paris until age 16. In the afternoons after the lyceé, Ed was the pupil of Philip Agazarian, an Armenian/French concert violinist with whom he performed at Salle Gaveau in Paris. Ed felt if he had not gone to the United States, he would have pursued a career as a concert violinist.

Ed spent 22 years at the University of Chicago in medical school, internship, and surgical residency, receiving an Associate Professorship with tenure. During his residency and while on active duty in the Navy (1958 – 1960) in the Chicago area, he continued his research projects. In 1971, he received the McClintock Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentoring. In 2006, Ed received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Chicago Medical and Biological Services Alumni Association. Following his time at the University of Chicago, Ed was Professor of Endocrine Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center and the Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development at Hines, Veterans Administration Hospital. Ed was a founding member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (President 1988) and of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He moved to private practice in endocrine surgery at Hinsdale Hospital in 1994. In 2013, Ed received the Centennial Medallion Award from Hinsdale Hospital for Outstanding Leadership and Achievement.

Ed and his late wife Geraldine Richveis Paloyan, were the proud parents of Vivian L. Paloyan, Regina Paloyan Walker, M.D. (Mark), Edmund B. Paloyan, M.D. (Kathy) and Grace Paloyan Halm, R.N. (Kevin), and the loving grandparents of eight grandchildren, Adrienne Walker Wilson (Kenton), Claire Walker, M.D., and James (Caroline) Walker; Elizabeth and Katherine Paloyan; and Mason, Jillian, and Maia Halm. Ed resided in Oak Brook, IL with his wife of 21 years, Mary Driscoll Paloyan. Visitation Friday, October 15th, 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Funeral Saturday, October 16th, 11:00 AM at Sullivan Funeral Home, 60 South Grant St. Hinsdale, IL. Interment will be at Bronswood Cemetery, Oak Brook, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorials to, St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church, 6700 W. Diversey Ave. Chicago, IL 60707, are appreciated. We lost a wonderful doctor and friend one year ago today.

I think of him daily as I take the medication he so perfectly prescribed after 2 bouts of thyroid cancer.

Thank you for all you did for me.

Looking forward to seeing you again.....in heaven....

I am very sorry to hear of Dr. Paloyan's passing. I was extremely sad when he retired as I had confidence in what he told me about my thyroid issues. I looked forward to my annual appointment for almost 20 years. He was a wonderful man and the Yoda of thyroid issues. My sincere condolences to his family.

I am so very sorry to hear of Dr. Paloyan's passing. He was my doctor for nearly 10 years and I always looked forward to seeing him. He was able to properly diagnose my thyroid issues when everyone else said there was nothing wrong. More than a wonderful doctor, he was a kind and caring man. I will always remember him fondly, especially his sweet smile. My deepest sympathies to his family and all who knew and loved him.

So sorry to hear this late of Dr. Paloyan's passing. He was my doctor for 20 years. I was sorry to lose him as a physician upon his retirement, but was very happy for him to have more time for himself, family and friends. What a wonderful, caring, skilled physician. I will never forget him and how he helped me through my thyroid cancer and care thereafter. He and his staff were always so kind. I hope Dr. Paloyan is reaping the rewards for the benefits he extended to many through the use of his skills and kindness during his time on this earth.

I worked w/ Ed in the O.R. @ LUMC in the 70's and then again
in the O.R. @ Hinsdale Hospital in the 90's.
I respected him immensely, both as a highly-detailed and compassionate surgeon, but also as an individual of the highest integrity.
I recall an unusual/humorous instance in O.R. #4 when he walked in prior to a procedure and proceeding to p/u some papers off the floor and placing it the trash. This tickled me as I'd never before seen a surgeon do so.
They broke the mold when they made you, Sir.... you will be sorely missed!

Dr. Paloyan removed my thyroid cancer in 1980, while I was a medical resident, and shortly after I lost my dad to cancer. He took such good care of me over the years. He was an amazing surgeon, and one of the kindest people I knew. I will forever miss him and his sweet smile. God bless his family in this difficult time. Linda

Dear Doctor Paloyan,
may God bless your soul. I truly love you as family as if you were my family You saved my life 38 years ago when you operated and removed my thyroid and parathyroid. I am not Armenian, I am an "Odar" Greek,
but Laura Pedian brought me to your office and introduced me to you and consequently you performed surgery on me and have been my friend ever since. You will always be in my heart doctor and I know where you are watching over your entire family from heaven. God bless you doctor, with loving respect, Demetri Alexander

I was a nurse for many years at Hinsdale Hospital. Dr. Paloyan was the nicest, kindest, most honest physician there ever was. He saved the lives of so many. My life is enriched for having known this classy gentleman. They broke the mold with him!
Rest in sweet peace, Dr. Paloyan.

Dr. Payloyan changed my life as a teenager. He diagnosed me with Hashimoto´s when all the other doctors dismissed my symptoms and told me I just needed to lose weight. I still remember crying with relief when he told me it wasn´t my fault that I was feeling so bad. I trusted him with my thyroid care for 30 years, traveling to Chicago to see home from wherever I lived. He always remembered me and treated me with respect and compassion even when I messed up my meds. He will forever be in my memories. I don´t know what would have happened to me if I hadn´t been diagnosed at such a fragile age. Thank you Dr. Payloyan. I will miss you!

Dr Paloyan was my doctor starting in 1984 and he did my thyroid surgery in 1985. When my daughter developed Hashimotos he became her doctor too. Even though we moved from Chicago to San Francisco and then to Tampa, he remained our doctor. Every two years we did a mother - daughter trip to Chicago to see him. We also used the trip to visit the places we loved.

When he couldn´t help my daughter carry a pregnancy to term, he stopped charging her for her office visits

We were last there when he was 88 and happily made our next appointment for two years later. Sadly by that time he had retired and it´s been a struggle to find another doctor. I started to say to replace him but he could never be replaced.

My heart hurts for his passing but I´ll be forever grateful for the care and friendship he provided for us all those years.
