I knew Jim at Stanford where he was a very happy go lucky guy and a serious swimmer. He was also a terrific jazz piano player. He could sit at the piano and play indefinitely without sheet music. He loved to dance. All this hid what was obviously a terrific intellect which led to an outstanding academic career. I am sorry for his passing.
