Mohan alias M Sherlock Singh - my detective partner from days gone by.
What known and unknown crimes have we not committed, or cases solved in Patiala. With little or no money to polish things, our wonderful existence was peopled by comics, books, music from the radio and airy philosophic notions. The fantasy land we created and have lived in since is no more - and your collection of comics has been lost forever.
We walked the old haunts of Patiala not so long ago and discovered to our joy that though the town had changed somewhat, we were quite the same. The house we lived in was ours no more but the lanes though paved had most of the familiar smells & sounds. The little kids we knew now ran their parents´ shops and the `Table Book Depot´ that operated under the lights at the crossing in `Adalat Bazar´ had moved to a covered shed nearby. You did buy a book on Ghalib though, just to give the old man custom for the trust he had placed in you - giving comics on credit when there really was no reason to.
Remember how Omar Khayyam´s Rubaiyat had us hooked even as then and indeed now; I have not grasped it fully. Though I committed all 75 quatrains to memory, I still have the nine square inch edition you presented me in the sixties. Whenever we met since, you would ask me to quote one or the other for old times´ sake, something I did with pleasure. Then again, what can replace the joy of reading the rare Louis Untermeyer edition of Cyrano de Bergerac together, commenting on the dialogues and agreeing that Roxane´s lament "I have loved but once - one man - And I must lose him twice" on Cyrano´s death as `just brilliant´.
There was little money back then, but we had ideas and hope with the confidence that things would work out. Your brilliance made you an international celebrity, yet you remained grounded. Despite costly whiskies & wines being available, you asked me to bring two bottles of Indian Rum when I came visiting. Harking back to the time when I would bring my Naval `Annual leave´ liquor quota to your sparse Rohtak lodgings. We would quaff Rum & Coke with peanuts & `pakoras´, talk about the women we loved, music, hope, destiny and the possible unravelling of Khayyam´s "...knot of human death and fate".
You have been generous, patient and forgiving - with kindness to a fault. The calming influence in turbulent times and the maker of beautiful memories. You will be missed by all whose lives you would have touched, however briefly that may sometimes have been.
I often wonder though if anyone can understand precisely what it is that binds friends. Perhaps it is just the joy of their companionship.
So dear departed friend and soulmate, tonight, as you go to a better place, I will drink myself silly on Rum & Coke. We often did that remember and I shall dream of the good times we had and what might have been.
Farewell for now dear friend and detective. The meeting in Valhalla awaits us.

Gurmeet and Family
We just want to express our sympathy for the loss of your Father Manmohan. Having met him at your wedding and speaking with him briefly, it was apparent that not only was he very happy for you and Tamara, he was very proud of you as well. You blessed him with Grandchildren and I'm certain he is keeping you all in his spirit as we speak.
With warmest regards and our sympathy.

Dr Singh took wonderful care of my Mother. He always greeted us with a smile & a wonderful understanding of the aches & pains of the elderly. He was most compassionate & we appreciated that.
