Rogelio Moncada Obituary

Dr. Rogelio Moncada, renowned radiologist, teacher and former member of the Mexican Olympic soccer team, died on June 25th of Alzheimer's disease at Autumn Leaves Home of St. Charles, Illinois. He was 81 years old. Dr. Moncada enjoyed a long successful academic and clinical career in radiology with subspecialties in cardiology and pediatrics. He served on the faculty of Loyola University for 35 years, where eventually he chaired the department and won the "Apple of the Year" teaching award multiple times. Dr. Leon Love, former Loyola chair of radiology, was Dr. Moncada's close friend and mentor throughout his career. After Loyola, Dr. Moncada was recruited and moved to New Orleans to join the faculty at Louisiana State University between 1999 and 2009. Dr. Moncada was passionate about medicine and he genuinely loved teaching it throughout his entire adult life. He enjoyed nothing better than leading the residents through a set of challenging case studies or teaching a new technique. He loved going to work every day and not many people are lucky enough to be able to say this.During his illustrious career, Dr. Moncada was published in many medical journals and books, and won many awards for his research. He was most proud of being awarded the magna cum laude and summa cum laude awards on separate occasions from the Radiological Society of North America for his groundbreaking research. In later years, Dr. Moncada served as President of this organization, as well as the Society of Computerized Tomography. He also traveled throughout the world lecturing at countless medical conferences. Dr. Moncada's favorite places to lecture were in Latin America, especially Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. He was instrumental in bringing the latest developments and techniques in radiology to these countries. He helped many of the people he met with their careers by giving advice and helping them find a job or a residency position. Rogelio Moncada Morales was born on March 10, 1933 in Monterrey, Mexico, to Juana Morales de Moncada and Raul Moncada Rivera. In 1955, he graduated with a degree in medicine from the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Mexico. In 1961, he completed his residency in radiology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He also completed fellowships in cardiology and pediatrics. Dr. Moncada was a devoted family man and a generous friend and colleague. In addition to his beloved wife, Lola, he is survived by his dear sister, Blanca, four loving children, Patty, Liz, Roy and Alex, and seven cherished grandchildren. A Memorial Service in celebration of Dr. Moncada's life will be held on Saturday, July 26th, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gibbons Elliston Funeral Home 60 S. Grant St., Hinsdale. I was a diagnostic radiology resident at Mr. Sinai Medical Center in Chicago from 1983-87, when George Greenfield, M.D. was the chairman. Dr. Moncada was one of our favorite guest lecturers and was famous for his dynamic teaching style and interaction with the residents. I enjoyed his lectures, often on cardiology and remember how impressive he was as a speaker. He was one of the first radiologists I knew who had received the FACR designation, and we were in awe of him. He inspired me and many others in our class.

Sadly delayed, I just now learned of the passing of my mentor Dr. Moncada. I was a resident in the Loyola program in 1972 when both he and Leon love gave me the opportunity to spend the best educational experience of my career. It was Roy´s insistence that I master the techniques of the new field of interventional radiology that stimulated my transfer into a surgical program in Boston. That he was instrumental in supporting that decision is a gift I could and can not never repay. I can still see his smile as he shook his head when I missed a vague sign on an X-ray and muttered a word in Spanish ( translation omitted) that I knew was said with affection. It was that same smile when I correctly identified the image, absent the commentary. I will never forget our weekly trips for Cuban food every Friday afternoon. His warmth was infectious !
I spent 50 years learning from and working with the best and the brightest. HE, was the best and the brightest. He was a kind , brilliant ,most generous with his time, and incredibly gifted educator I was most fortunate to have trained under such a luminary in American and international radiology . What he taught me made me a better surgeon.
I am saddened beyond words to now learn about the cruel irony of his terminal disease. How blessed are all of the members of his family to have the memories of this truly exceptional man. I am blessed to have my memories as well.
