Ross Eustis Obituary

died peacefully on May 2, 2016 at the age of 96 rejoining his beloved wife of 62 years, the former Marilyn Shane, and late daughter, Kathy Eustis Leighton. Ross is survived by 4 children: Donnelly Eustis Rembert, Orange Park, FL, James Ross Eustis, Jr., Bronxville, NY, Conrad Eustis, Portland, OR, and Brian Eustis, Sandy Springs, GA; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Ross was born and raised in New Orleans, LA and attended Tulane University until joining the U.S. Navy in 1940. Ross served in the Pacific during WWII, rising to the rank of Lt. Commander. Following the war, Ross moved to the North Shore of Chicago, ultimately moving to Winnetka, where he lived and raised his children for 56 years. He had a successful career as a Certified Life Underwriter for nearly 50 years. Ross was very active in the community: volunteering in boy scouts, served as a member of the vestry of Christ Church for more than a decade, and supported the launch of the first senior center in Winnetka. He was an avid tennis player for 76 years, and his enthusiasm for the game extended to taking an active role in officiating tennis matches throughout the Midwest and at the US Open and to offering lessons, as a volunteer, to disadvantaged youth. A Memorial Service will be held for Ross at the Reformed Church of Bronxville, NY on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. The family requests that memorials in lieu of flowers be sent to XS Tennis and Education Foundation at 1301 E 47th St. Chicago, IL 60643.

The best memories will be his happiness in his family. All should cherish memories of those family reunions and what they meant to Marilyn and Ross.

The Fawcett's are sorry to hear of Ross' passing and remember him fondly as a friendly and wonderful next door neighbor.

I remember how much Mr. and Mrs. Eustis enjoyed spending time on their screened front porch and would always say hello.

I also remember the time Ross and one of the sons - maybe Brian - cut down a huge tree in their backyard with chain saws and ropes all by themselves. It was very impressive.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
