Jack Foley Obituary

Jack Lee Foley died Sept. 12, 2013.
He was born in Lockhart, Ala. to Albert and Esther Farmer Foley in 1930 and his family moved to Gulf Hammock in 1936.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Beth; two daughters and four sons, Linda Justus (Al) Wright of California, Dorinda (Bob) Cline of Arizona, Wade (Cindy) Foley and Dale Foley of Texas, Jason Foley of Chiefland and Wesley Foley of Sunny Isles.
The third of seven children, Jack is survived by a brother and three sisters, Don (Russelene) Foley, Betty Schreiber, Faye (Sanford) Roberts and Janice (Norman) Wright, 11 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jack will be missed by all his family but especially by eight-year-old Jason Foley Jr. who has spent thousands of hours during the last eight years with his beloved Grandpa.
Jack graduated with a doctorate from UF and retired from the Florida University System, having taught for UF and FAU for over 35 years.
In the 1960s and 1970s, he wrote and received a number of large federal grants and worked with hundreds of mathematics teachers throughout Florida and many other states. He was the major author of a three-year mathematics series published by Addison-Wesley.
He served in Korea while in the Navy for six years. A very active man for most of his life, he worked as an educational consultant while teaching, built and renovated several houses in his spare time and enjoyed fishing.
After retirement, Dr. Foley remained very active professionally for 10 years continuing his work as a consultant especially in Brevard, Martin, Okeechobee, and Seminole counties.
During the last few years Jack began writing stories about growing up in Gulf Hammock that were published in 2012. "Those Were the Times" was well received, especially by the people of Levy County. Their warm regard for Jack and his book gave him a special focus as he faced the losses associated with Alzheimer's disease.
A celebration of Jack's life will be held at a later date.
