On July 31, 2012, Richard let go of the hands of his three children to take the hand of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Richard was born April 11, 1925, to Joseph and Margaret (Groshek) Konopacky, in Chippewa Falls. He attended elementary schools in Chippewa Falls and graduated from McDonell Memorial High School in 1943. His family moved to Stevens Point in 1943 to his current address at 465 W. Clark St.
Richard worked briefly for the Soo Line Railroad in 1943, before enlisting in the Army. He served from Sept. 17, 1943 until March 21, 1946. He was a member of Company B, 289th Infantry Regiment, 175th Division. He was a PFC stationed in Central Europe.
After the service, Richard returned to the Soo Line Railroad. He was employed with the Soo Line until his retirement in 1986.
On June 26, 1948, Richard married the girl of his dreams, Marjorie Jean Lucille Cammack. They were united in marriage at the St. Stephen's Catholic Rectory. A marriage that lasted 62 years until Marjorie's passing. The couple raised three children Curtis, Lyn Ellen, and Peggy (Kurt) Slowinski, all residing in Stevens Point.
Richard was a member of the Elks Lodge #641 in Stevens Point.
As anyone who has ever driven past his residence will tell you, Richard was an avid gardener. He could make anything blossom. His garden was his passion, which he passed on to his son, Curtis.
Richard was under the care of Ministry Home Care-Hospice Services, and his son for the last leg of his journey.
Survivors include: a son, Curtis Konopacky; two daughters, Lyn Ellen Konopacky, and Peggy (Kurt) Slowinski; two grandsons, Martin (Mandy) Slowinski, and Frank (Natalie) Slowinski; two great-grandsons, Griffin Michael and Callum Graham Slowinski; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Donald and Ray.
A Celebration of his life will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Stevens Point. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery. A visitation will take place at church on Monday beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be set up in Richard's name for Ministry Home Care-Hospice Services.
