Paul Hutton Obituary
Paul Manard Hutton, 90, Bethanne Mann McIvor's father, was born March 29, 1925, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He passed away May 18, 2015, at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home in Land O'Lakes, Florida
His father graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1913 and was a professor at UT for 40 years and a pioneer in aminal husbandry. His mother was the granddaughter of Richard White, who gave White Pine, Tennessee its name in 1872. Paul's mother was a college graduate in 1914 from Virginia Intermont College where she majored in music and taught piano many years.
Paul remembered growing up during the Great Depression when his family lost everything. As a boy he loved riding his bicycle long distances to watch trains. He hand milked, bottled, and delivered milk to neighbors and raised collie puppies. He remembered donating in school for starting Smoky Mountains National Park, and later took the family on long western camping trips to many national parks.
He graduated high school early on his 18th birthday because he was anxious to help with the war effort and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served three years aboard the USS Hydrus Naval ship operating a rescue and recovery boat in the Pacific battle regions. He suffered serious leg wounds and doctors wanted to amputate. He promised his mother he would read the Bible every day while he was away during WWII. His buddies called him "Tugboat" because he kept them on the straight and narrow path and helped get them back on the ship.
After the war he graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Agricultural Sciences. He was the Soil Conservationist in Jefferson County, Tennessee for many years. He remained in the Naval Rserve until 1978.
After retirement Paul and Betty enjoyed many long trips on freighter ships around the world. He wrote many short stories and poetry as well as artwork. He touched many lives with his kindness and knowledge especially in geography and science.
He had three children, William Lee Hutoon of Knoxville, Tennessee, David Laurence Hutoon, deceased, and Bethanne Mann McIvor of Beverly Hills, Florida; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Paul has two living sisters, Virginia McConnell of Boulder, Colorado, and Mary Allen of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Caroline Keith, deceased. His wife, Elizabeth Anne, preceded him in death by 11 years.
Burial at White Pine Cemetery, White Pine, Tennessee, with a Military Honor Guard ceremony.
