Arthur EVANS Obituary
EVANS Arthur Thompson, MD. Art Evans practiced urology in Cincinnati for 32 years, first entering into partnership with Dr. Parke Smith in 1952. In 1960, he added to his private practice the responsibility of running the Division of Urology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, having been named Professor and Director. Caring for patients and training students was his life's work and he always felt grateful that he had the opportunity to do both. Art's office was generally overflowing with patients willing to wait long hours to see him, knowing he was trying to give each of them the time and attention needed to get his problem solved. His patients were like his friends and he really wanted to take good care of them. He gave as much of himself as he possibly could. Teaching allowed him to pass along his skills, his enthusiasm, his standards to the next wave of doctors. He worked vigorously over the years to transform the quiet division he inherited into a nationally acclaimed, 12-man residency program. He developed formal research programs, innovative surgical and diagnostic techniques, an annual urology x-ray seminar that drew national attendance. For the American Urological Association and the National Institutes of Health he instituted a pilot program in the College of Medicine for training Urologic Physicians' Assistants. High standards of performance and behavior and a friendly, relaxed, down-to-earth approach became the hallmarks of the Division.Art Evans was born in Huron, South Dakota on November 26, 1919, to Arthur and Anna (nee Hansen) Evans. He and his three siblings grew up in Oxford, Ohio, where their much admired dad was Professor and Chairman of the Botany Department. "Artie' played high school football for his mentor and friend, famed coach Weeb Ewbank. At his alma mater, Miami University, he played first string tackle for the Redskins and was president of Tribe Miami. There he also met his future wife Jean Porter whom he married in 1942. Their 63 year marriage produced one daughter, three sons - and much happiness. Art went to medical school at the University of Chicago and did his internship and surgical urology residency at the University of Cincinnati, interrupted by two years as Chief of Surgery at the Davis Monthan Army Air CorpsBase. During his training, he and noted radiologist Dr. Ben Felson developed arteriography of the kidney, a much celebrated achievement which began to change diagnostic procedure. The enthusiasm and determination that drove Art through his training and career won him honors too numerous to mention. He held many positions within the American Urological Association and won their lifetime service award for teaching, was on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Urology, founded professional groups, a magazine, etc. That buoyant optimism also enabled him to derive immense enjoyment out of life generally, as he pursued all sorts of projects that interested him - pig farming, the breeding and racing of standardbred horses and cross stitch to name a few. Retirement to Wisconsin and Florida in1984 gave him a chance to further expand his horizons, however many of his later years were devoted to caring for Jean. Art Evans was a simple man with high standards and great expectations - that unique person who could make an ordinary trip to the grocery store a great adventure! When, on November 9, 2005, the kind heart that had served him so long and so well stopped beating, no words of sadness could suffice. He will be missed by his many friends and acquaintances, but most of all by his family - his wife, his daughter Christine Augustine (Anthony), his sons (who all followed him into medicine) Arthur (Catherine), William (Lisa), and Charles (Nancy), nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Evans notice continued above. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 18 at 10:00 A.M. at the Hyde Park Community Methodist Church on the corner of Observatory and Grace, in order that we may together say goodbye to him. Rev. L H Mayfield, former Director of Pastoral Care at Christ Hospital, will preside. Memorial contributions may be sent to UCF/Evans Fund, PO Box 670544, UC College of Medicine, Cincinnati, OH 45267 to benefit the teaching of urology and continue the improvement patient care in his name.
