Raymond Laubenthal Obituary

LAUBENTHAL

Raymond "Ray" George Laubenthal passed away peacefully January 15, 2018 at the age of 79. He was married to Susan (nee Miller) Laubenthal in 1967 and they just celebrated their 50th anniversary. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Mary Catherine Laubenthal. He is survived by his brother-in-law Tim (Marlene) Miller; brothers, Kent (Linda) Laubenthal of Utica, NY and Joe (Sandy) Laubenthal of Dayton, OH; sister, Della (Gary) Bowers of Perrysburg, OH. He is also survived by many other dear family and friends. Ray grew up in Perrysburg, OH where he attended Perrysburg High School and was president of his senior class. He came to the University of Cincinnati in 1956 to attend the College of Design, Art and Architecture where he graduated from the department of Interior Design. He was a proud member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and a lifelong supporter of the Bearcats. Ray also attended Ecole des Beaux Arts in France. After graduation in 1961, Ray began his 43 year teaching career in the school of DAAP at the University of Cincinnati. He retired as an Associate Professor and later was designated Professor Emeritus. When Ray retired he was the senior faculty member, teaching longer than any other professor in the college and was proud that the Interior Design Department was ranked #1 in the country. During retirement Ray enjoyed collecting old, still banks. He was a board member of the Still Bank Collectors of America. He valued the many good friends he made attending the yearly convention. Ray's other hobbies included fishing, collecting fish decoys, gardening and "junking." He loved spending his summers on Burt Lake in Northern Michigan with family and friends. Ray left this life having pursued his passions, loving his wife and enjoying his retirement. Ray we will miss your well ironed khakis and remember the days you only wore light blue button-down shirts. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 10 AM at Armstrong Chapel, 5125 Drake Rd 45243 (at the intersection of Drake and Indian Hill Rd.), Indian Hill. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to UC Foundation (P.O. Box 19970 Cincinnati, OH 45219), Junior League of Cincinnati Endowment Fund Columbia Center (3500 Columbia Parkway Cincinnati, OH 45226), or Association of Volunteers, Convalescence Hospital for Children (5729 Dragon Way Cincinnati, OH 45227).

Mrs Laubenthal, my prayers go out to you and your family. As a student of Ray's, late 90's rendering DAAP class, my heart stopped to hear this news.

Ray Laubenthal has to be one of the most intriguing, captivating and inspiring gentlemen in my life. He was a constant encouragement and motivator, he had a witty personality and the friendliest and most approachable smile! His cup of coffee, Khaki pants and greeting upon entering our class every day, Well, hello there! was a highlight in my years at DAAP. I truly enjoyed your husband and grateful for the way he brought out the best in me as a person! I know his legacy will live on through each of us as we go through our careers - as he would say, Well, I know that.

Aww Ray, doggonit, I'm reminded of some sweet times at the lake with you pressing my dad for stories and of course our forays fly fishing the Sturgeon. Those fish never had better friends than you and I. :-)

God speed brother and I 'm sure you'll find a dappled stream full of brookies at the end of your portage.

Dear Susie,
Mary & I were shocked to hear such sad news about Rays passing. We were so fortunate to have just seen him three weeks earlier at our Christmas get together. We have such fond memories of Ray and what a wonderful gentlemen he was. We will truly miss our conversations about Michigan and Burt lake and also his beloved Bearcat football and basketball teams. Ray was a person of great charater and incredible integrity. We we so lucky to have known him for 30 plus years. We will miss him dearly but know he is in a great place rooting on his Bearcats. It is in this way that we will remember such a wonderful wonderful person in Ray. Our sincere condolences and sympathy to you Susie and the rest of your family. We love you very much.
