John W. Yocius

John W. Yocius, "Johnny Angel," 80, of North Sherman Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, at the Celtic Healthcare Inpatient Unit, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre on Oct. 5, 1935, the son of the late Anthony and Veronica (Glomanavich) Yocius. He was a life resident of Wilkes-Barre, where he attended the Wilkes-Barre city schools.

John was employed as a roofer by various construction companies in the local area.

He was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.

He was a member of the former Holy Trinity Church, Wilkes-Barre, and was also a member of American Legion Post 815, Wilkes-Barre Township.

Preceding him in death were a son, John Yocius Jr.; brothers, Joseph and Leo Price and Anthony and William Yocius; and sisters, Elizabeth Ann Trypak and Bernadine McGonigle.

Surviving are daughters, Marlene and Selena, both of Wilkes-Barre; several grandchildren; brother, Adam Yocius and wife, Betty, Cleveland, Ohio; and sisters, Barbara Poperowitz and husband, Frank, Shickshinny; Leona Flint, Cleveland, Ohio; and Rose Marie Unvarsky, Wilkes-Barre. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with a Blessing service officiated by the Rev. Vincent Dang, from George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256, or at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the entire staff of the Celtic Healthcare Inpatient Unit, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, for their professional and compassionate care given to John in his time of need.
