Harold Geer Obituary

Harold H. Geer passed away at a local health care facility on Tuesday, January 10, 2006. He was born in Topeka on May 22, 1937, the son of Harold H. Martin and Bernadine Griffith Martin. Mr. Geer was a graduate of Topeka High School and Washburn University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. During his senior year at Washburn, he served as Student Council President and as pastor of the Silver Lake Methodist Church. From 1959 to 1961 he served as a Chaplains Aide in the United States Army. Following discharge from the Army, Harold joined the Kansas Lung Association. This began a nearly four decade career in public health. In 1963 he joined the (then) Kansas State Health Department, working in the Tuberculosis Section. He later became Director of the Kansas Statewide Tuberculosis Program. Harold retired from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in 1996. He was preceded in death by his father, his stepfather, Edward J. Geer; and his companion, John Lincoln. He is survived by his mother, Bernadine Geer, Topeka; a brother and sister in law, Bill and Darlene Geer, Topeka; two nieces and their husbands, Carol A. and Andres Vicuna, Tucson, AZ; Robine M. and Gary Troxell, Springfield, MO; and a grand-niece, Elizabeth M. Troxell, Springfield, MO. Mr. Geer was cremated. Celebrationn of Life Services will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2006, 1:00 P.M., at Grace Epsicopal Cathedral, 701 SW Eighth Street where he was a longtime member. Private inurnment services will follow. Penwell-Gable is in charge of services. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Grace Episcopal Catherdral, and sent to Penwell-Gable Midtown Chapel, 1321 SW Tenth Street, Topeka, KS 66604. I was very saddened to hear of Harold's death. I enjoyed visiting him in his home and entertaining him in mine. He will be greatly missed.
