Howard Lindsay Obituary

WINCHESTER ~ Howard "Mark" Lindsay, 78, Winchester, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Jefferson County Geriatric Center in Winchester. He was born April 9, 1916, at Okmulgee, Okla., the son of Joseph Hunt and Goldie Mark Lindsay. He had lived in the Winchester area since 1926. Mr. Lindsay was a firefighter and security man at the Hercules Powder and Ordnance Plant in DeSoto from 1951 until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of Oskaloosa Masonic Lodge No. 14, AF&AM, a Past Master of Jefferson Lodge No. 84 of Winchester, and a 32nd-degree member of the Scottish Rite bodies. He was a 52-year member of Davis-Gibson American Legion Post No. 387, Winchester, and was a graduate of Winchester High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific and Marshall Islands. He was married to Vera Irene Wagy on Nov. 30, 1940, at Troy. She preceded him in death on Dec. 25, 1990. Survivors include two sons, Howard "Gene" Lindsay, Independence, Mo., and Dennis Lindsay, Kingman, Ariz.; one daughter, Vicki Alonzo, Topeka; three brothers, Paul Lindsay, Liberty, Mo., and Joe Lindsay and Karl Lindsay, both of Winchester; one sister, Vera Lou Miller, Lawrence; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Winchester. Burial will be in the Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery. Mr. Lindsay will lie in state after noon Monday at Barnett Funeral Home, Oskaloosa. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by Oskaloosa Lodge No 14. Memorials may be made to Jefferson County Hospice, in care of Barnett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066.
