John Irvin Dawkins, 70, of Brandon, MS, went home to be with his Lord and Savior after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, December 9 and from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, December 10 at Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home. The celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Lakewood Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park.

John and his twin brother, Henry, were born on July 26, 1941 in Louin, MS to Ora Belle Maske Dawkins and Henry LeRoy Dawkins.

John graduated from Bay Springs High School in 1959. He attended Jones Community College before transferring to Delta State University. He completed training as a medical technologist at Mercy Hospital in Vicksburg, MS.

After working at a number of hospitals in the Jackson area, he joined the VA Medical Center and retired in 2008 after over 37 years of service.

John was a member of Crossgates United Methodist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandsons. He loved the Lord with all of his heart.

John is survived by his wife, Rita Smith Dawkins after over 40 years of marriage. He is survived by his son, Jon Brice Dawkins (Kandis) of Terry, MS; his daughter Amber Dawkins Curtis (Aaron) of Madison, MS and three grandchildren, Scott Laddell Stanford, Jon Brennan Dawkins and Cooper Wade Curtis. He is also survived by his twin brother, Henry LeRoy Dawkins, Jr. (Dolly) of Clinton, MS and his brother-in-law, Charles Albert Smith (Cheryl) of San Antonio, TX; six nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Hospice Ministries for their kind, compassionate care and love during his stay at their facility.
