Elizabeth Vorenberg Obituary

Elizabeth Gumbel Vorenberg

Elizabeth Gumbel Vorenberg, lover of animals, nursing and especially of her family, died peacefully on January 10, 2016 in Fort Collins, Colorado. She was born in Worms, Germany on April 6, 1920 and spent early years in Bad Homburg, a small town outside of Frankfurt. The horror of the Holocaust forced Elizabeth and the rest of her family to relocate to the United States. She moved to New Orleans where she attended Touro Infirmary School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse in 1943. Following her graduation, Elizabeth joined her family in Denver, Colorado and began her nursing career. This is where she met Fred Vorenberg, a Colorado State University student who was pursuing a degree in Animal Husbandry. Their love was immediate and they married nine months later. Fred and Elizabeth ranched in eastern Colorado, first in Castle Rock, then Ramah and finally on a spread near Calhan. They raised cattle, sheep, dogs, and many other animals. After 36 years they sold the ranch and spent their retirement years in El Paso, Texas. Elizabeth moved to Fort Collins after Fred died in 2005 where she became an active participant at the Fort Collins Senior Center. She enjoyed her hobbies of skydiving and creative writing. Elizabeth wrote a book of her ranchland memories entitled "A Calf in the Kitchen: Echoes from a Ranch Woman". She is survived by her four children, Tom (Barb) Vorenberg, Bonnie Vorenberg (Robert Dupuy), Susan Musgrave, Jack Vorenberg; brother, Martin Gumbel (Dorita); grandchildren, Emily, Andrew, Tanya, Audrey, Eric and Stephen; five great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, 2:00 pm, at The Worthington Retirement Center, 900 Worthington Circle, Fort Collins. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Elizabeth's name to either The Fort Collins Senior Center, the Larimer Humane Society or Stephen's Soldiers Foundation. Elizabeth has been a bright light in my life for the past ten years. She is one of the kindest and most interesting women I have ever met, and shares my love of animals and nature. Thanks to her lead, I now pick up spiders and snakes (except for rattlers!) and move them off paths. I'll miss her companionship immensely.
