Frances Petersmeyer Obituary

Frances Gregg Petersmeyer

Memphis, TN

93, died in Washington D.C. on November 10, 2015. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. She was the eldest of four daughters of Irene and Russell Gregg. Her father was an executive with Anderson Clayton and Company. Frances graduated from Lausanne School and attended a post graduate year at St. Catherine's School. She graduated from Sweet Briar College in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1943. During the war, she worked in Memphis for the Commercial Appeal, and met and married Charles Wrede Petersmeyer, a Captain in the Army who went on to become one of the early pioneers of television broadcasting. Frances was an avid reader and conversationalist, and loved to travel and explore new places. She and her husband lived in Bronxville, New York from 1948-1989 and raised their three children there. During that time, Frances was active in the Junior League and in Christ Church Bronxville, where in 1967 she became the first woman elected to the vestry. Following her husband's death in 1996, Frances resided briefly in Memphis and then moved to Pennsylvania and to Washington D.C. to be closer to her children and their families. She is predeceased by her husband and by her sisters: Nancy Gregg Lewis of Memphis and Emily Gregg of Fayetteville, Arkansas. She is survived by her children: Susan Petersmeyer of Camden, Maine, Gregg Petersmeyer and his wife Julie of Bethesda, Maryland and Nancy Petersmeyer MD of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and by 8 grandchildren and 8 great -grandchildren. She is also survived by her youngest sister Mary Gregg Loeb of Eads, Tennessee. A memorial service will be held in Washington, D.C.
