FRANK HUFFMAN Obituary

Frank Jackson Huffman, Jr. April 2, 1944 December 19, 2011. With hearts both heavy and joyful, the family of Frank Jackson Huffman, Jr., announces his peaceful death at home on Monday evening, December 19. Frank grew up in Steele, Missouri, completing high school at the Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee in 1962. He graduated from Duke University with a BA in History with Honors in 1966, and received his PhD in History from Yale University in 1974. Frank was an instructor of history at the University of Houston from 1970 until 1976, when he moved to Memphis and joined the Crump Companies as Assistant to the Chief Financial Officer. He remained with Crump and its successor companies for many years, ultimately serving as Senior Vice President and Director of Corporate Communications for Sedgwick Claims Management Services, Inc., until his death. During his career he also served as Director of Corporate Communications and Human Resources at eOn Communications; and as Director of the Memphis-based Day Foundation. Active in the Memphis community, Frank was a member of Second Baptist Church from 1976 until his death. He joyously sang tenor in the choir, was the founding Director of the Memphis Interfaith Hospitality Network (MIHN) at Second Baptist, and served at different points as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and an enthusiastic Lassie Girls Basketball coach. Frank was also Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors of Samaritan Counseling Centers of the Mid-South, and the former President of the Memphis Chapter of the national Multiple Sclerosis Society. Frank is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Katharine Phillips Huffman, and their three children and their families: Katharine Huffman, John Rusciolelli, and children, Dominic Frank and Mary Katharine; Dora Huffman Mullenix, Jason Mullenix, and children, Joshua Phillips, Katharine Rebekah, and Noah Jackson; and Frank Jackson Huffman III, and Abby May. He is also survived by his sister, Martha Huffman; his mother-in-law, Katharine Aiken Phillips; and many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and in-laws. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank Jackson Huffman, Sr., and Dora Coppedge Huffman; and by his sister, Rebekah Huffman Dietrich. Frank’s greatest joys were, as he put it, “in these family relationships.” He loved reading, singing, traveling, golfing with good friends, and attending the activities and events of children and grandchildren. Even in the final days of his life, Frank spoke frequently of his gratitude for the constant and loving support of family and many friends. He asked that his appreciation be conveyed for the role that so many played in making the presence of God so real for him during his year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Frank’s family will remember him always with great love and delight, and with appreciation for his living exemplification of a favorite verse from the Bible: “What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:8. The family asks that memorial gifts be sent to Memphis Interfaith Hospitality Network, Samaritan Counseling Centers of the Mid-south, the Hatley Fund at Second Baptist Church, or Methodist Hospice. Visitation will take place at Memphis Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 21, from 5-7 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Second Baptist Church on Thursday, December 22, at 11 a.m., with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Katharine, I have had you and your family in my daily prayers--even since we lost our commom bond at the closing of Curves. I'm glad Frank was able to enjoy a final Thanksgiving. He sounds like an amazing, wonderful person, and I know you all will miss him until the day of your reunion with him in the eternal peace that he has already won. My prayers remain with you.

I worked with Frank from a distance for over 20 years. I can honestly say that he was one of the nicest individuals that I ever met and was fortunate to consider him a close friend. I remember well numerous days in the Memphis office, after a plane ride from Maine, followed by dinner with Frank and Katherine. Frank was the one person who would always reach out. He was a true gentlemen in every sense of the word and is missed in Maine as well as Memphis. My condolences to Katherine and family. Mark Crasnick

I had the pleasure of knowing Frank from our employment with Sedgwick CMS. Though we didn't know each other well, he never failed to greet me by name which always made me feel special. His thoughtful, caring and kind spirit now flows freely and joyfully in a place where no tears, pain or sorrow exists. He was a friend and mentor to many and will not be forgotten.

The world has lost a great man, and I have lost a dear friend and mentor. I was privileged to work for Frank Huffman for 4 years at Sedgwick. He taught me so much about the claims management industry and corporate communications, but even more about the kind of person I want to be. Frank genuinely cared about every person who crossed his path. His office door was open to all, no matter how busy he was. He doted on his family, and he volunteered to help the homeless and those in need of counseling. The grace and courage with which he handled his yearlong illness were nothing short of inspiring. All who knew him are better people because of Frank.

My Deepest and most heart-felt Sympathy to all of Frank's Family. You are all in my thoughts & prayers. Frank was one of the kindest and most honorable of people that I met during my many years at Fred. S. James & Sedgwick CMS. I remember, one time, being in Memphis and desperately needing a friend to talk to, he was there for me with a smile, and also with kind & encouraging words. He was, indeed, a very special person. Frank will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is now at Peace with all of the other Angels. Always - Phyllis

Frank was an exceptional gentleman. Open, honest, smart, respectful, well spoken and kind. It was a pleasure working with him from our initial meeting in the mid eighties, until the Marsh/Sedgwick merger where our professional paths diverged. Janet and I extend our heartfelt sympathy to the Huffman family.

I was a childhood friend from the 1st thru 8th grade with Frank in Steele, MO. He was such a nice guy when we were young and I was fortunate enough to get together with Frank in Memphis with some other classmates for lunch. He never changed. He was just a great guy. My prayers and thoughts go out to the Huffman family in their time of this great lost. - Steve Bourell, Steele High School Classmate

In our 70+ years, in several Churches, Frank has provided one of the best examples of what it means to be a Christian. Indeed he fought "the good fight", he did justily, loved mercy, and walked humbly with God. Earl and Gwen Sears

I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. Huffman, but as a colleague of Sedgwick, we are a family. One Company, One Team. I will pray that God strengthens his family and allow them to rejoice that he will be at peace. Many great things have been said about him so I am sure he was a wonder person. Your family is in my prayers and may his legacy and spirit continue to live through all of the organizations he was was part of.
