John Mitchell Obituary

10/9/41-8/26/15

John passed away peacefully on August 26, 2015 at Presidential Oaks in Concord N.H. after a lengthy illness. Born in East Greenwich R.I., he was the second of seven sons of the late George and Grace Mitchell (Warner).

John was also predeceased by his brother Guilford and one nephew. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Madeleine (Maddie) Mitchell of Hillsboro N.H., his son Shawn and his wife Kelly Mitchell of Maine, grandchildren Karen and Nicholas as well as brothers; David, Gary, Duane, Paul, Douglas, and their loving families, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John took great pleasure in providing for and assisting others throughout his life. He served with the United States Army for 22 years, devoted over 40 years as a law enforcement officer, serving as Police Chief in Harrisville, Deering, and Washington N.H. as well as a police officer in Hillsboro N.H.. John also spent a number of years as a volunteer firefighter in Harrisville and Deering N.H. John finally retired from service as a corporal at the New Hampshire Department of Corrections.

John was a Life Member of the American Legion Post 59 in Hillsboro N.H., where he previously served as a post, district and national officer.

A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at the NH Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen N.H. on Friday, September 11 at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's memory to the following organizations: Hillsboro Fire Department Rescue Squad, PO Box 7 Hillsboro, N.H. 03244 or Presidential Oaks 200 Pleasant St. Concord N.H., 03301.
