Lt. Colonel William E. Brummett (retired), age 77, of Pride, KY died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at Methodist Hospital Union County.
He was a 1955 Sturgis High School graduate. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1960, with a Bachelor's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He later earned a Masters Degree from Troy State University. Upon graduation from the University of Kentucky, he accepted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force. During his 21 year career as a fighter pilot and test pilot in the USAF, he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Panama Canal Conflict, and 2 tours in Vietnam. He received numerous commendations in the Air Force including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued on as a corporate pilot for various companies. His final position was with Ervin Cable Company as Chief Pilot/Aviation Manager. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Kenneth and Barbara Almeda (Haney) Brummett; brother, Norman Earl Brummett.
Survivors include wife of 57 years, Helen Lou (Duncan) Brummett, of Pride, Ky.; two sons, William E. Brummett II and wife Pattye, of Pride, Ky., and Phillip G. Brummett and wife Michelle, of Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Gena DeLamar and husband Mike, of Waverly, Ky.; five grandchildren, William E. Brummet III, Jordan Brummett, Duncan Taylor, Kenneth Brummett, Slaton Brummett; three stepgrandchildren, Eugene, Josh and Brandon Capps; and one great-granddaughter, Aria Brummett.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis, Ky. Rev. David Oaks will officiate. Burial will be in Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.
