Robert Nolting Obituary

Nolting, Robert N..
Robert Neil Nolting, 80, of Stratford, CT, beloved husband of Sheila Haffner Nolting, died peacefully, with his loving family by his side, on Friday, February 7, 2014. The son of the late Wallace and Grace Sammis Nolting, he was born in Bridgeport, CT on August 21, 1933. Bob, a lifelong resident of Stratford was a 1951 graduate of Stratford High School where he was nicknamed 'Noodles'. Bob attended the University of Connecticut, and while there, was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon discharge, he enrolled in the University of Bridgeport where he earned a B. S. in Economics and was a later graduate of the Williams College School of Banking. He began his career in banking at Connecticut National Bank, moving on to Stratford Trust, which became Cititrust and later became President of the Bank of Stratford and North American Bank. Upon his retirement from banking, Bob returned to his first love: music. Witnessing Benny Goodman at the Paramount Theater in NYC in 1948 inspired Bob to learn and play the clarinet, both tenor and alto saxophones and flute throughout his life. During high school, he organized and led the big band 'Bob Nolting and his Orchestra' and played at many events and high school proms throughout the region. At the time of his death, he was a member and President of the Stratford Community Band, The Paul King Orchestra, American Festival Band, also serving as Treasurer, the Milford Community Band and Wayne Hiller Octet. Bob was a past President of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, the St. Mark School PTA and the American Red Cross. He was an avid Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, Bruins as well as UCONN Huskies basketball fan. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play basketball and baseball. Bob was also a voracious reader and had a photographic memory; if you met Bob once, you would have thought he knew you for a lifetime: he had an amazing ability to remember everything about you. In addition to his wife of 37 years, he is survived by his former wife Dorothy Nolting of Stratford and their children and spouses, Robert and Karen Nolting of Trumbull, Caroline and Terry Morrissey of Stratford, Ronald and Terry Nolting of Stratford, Michael Nolting of Tarpon Springs, Florida and Richard and Lynn Nolting of Wesley Chapel, Florida. In addition, he is survived by 14 grandchildren: Andrew, Eric and Caroline Morrissey, Stephanie, Matt, Nick, Alyssa, Michael, Mitchell, Richard, Doug, Jack, Scott and Lani Nolting. He is also survived by several cousins, and four stepsons, Rick, Chuck, Geoff and George LaBash. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, February 11th at 10:30 a.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford, with Rev. Birendra Soreng officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call on Monday from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association 1 Union Street Suite 301 Robbinsville, NJ 06891. To Sheila and the entire Nolting Family: From all of the Bardellis', you have our deepest heartfelt condolences. Bob is a great man and will be truly missed. He always loved (and was a great supporter) to attend the family reunions. I know I will miss him. But, I'm sure he is with all the Sammis family members and enjoying a huge family reunion of his own!
