Dr. L. Stayton Halberdier, Jr., renowned physician, was born May 3, 1941 and went peacefully home to The Lord on June 5, 2014 surrounded by his family at his personal residence. He was born and raised in Kingsville, TX and known around town as a great tall athlete, smart and full of life. As a young man he enjoyed fishing and hunting with his father, which became one of his lifetime passions. Stayton attended Texas A&I, Kingsville as a dual athlete playing Basketball and Golf for the Javelinas. Following graduation from Texas A&I he was accepted into UTMB Galveston where he earned his Medical Degree specializing in Family Practice and moved to Houston to complete his internship at Hermann Hospital in the Medical Center. In 1970 he was commissioned into the Navy and sent to Vietnam for one year as a Lieutenant in the Navy Medical Corps where he served US service members and the local villages in need of medical care. While in Vietnam he sent a love letter to his girlfriend in Houston, Diana Swenson, asking her to meet him in Tokyo while he was "on leave", she accepted the invitation and while touring the city of Tokyo he asked for her hand in marriage. Upon return to USA, he married Diana and they moved to California where he completed his second year of service at OaklandNavalHospital. Dr. Halberdier started his Houston Medical career in the Spring Branch area. A few years later he moved to the FM 1960 area joining the HoustonNorthwestMedicalCenterHospital. Four years later he was elected Chief of Staff at HNWMC as well as chairing several committees, and becoming a member of the AmericanAcademy of Family Practice, while also being involved in the HNWMC hospital business operations. Towards the end of his career he was appointed to HNWMC Board of Trustees. Truly, it was his loving heart, compassion for helping people and genuine spirit that enabled him to quickly establish and maintain one of the largest Family Practice offices in the Northwest Houston area for nearly 40 years. He affectionately cared, helping each patient understand the nature of their diagnosis and over the years, family generations proudly called him, "My Doctor". He was cherished and loved by all those who worked with him during his career. "Doc" always looked forward to hosting the "Office Party" at his house on LakeConroe. He loved taking family trips, always inviting others to join. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to the Caribbean. He loved being a "Dad" and was so proud of his three children. Blessed with grandchildren as well, he became "Big Daddy", loved them dearly and cherished every moment with another 3 bundles of joy. As a Great Outdoorsman, he loved getting away to hunt or fish with anyone, and sure loved his time spent with friends. He retired to his home in Bentwater after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's. However, courageously fought his medical condition with family, friends, Dr. Rachelle Doody and many others who shared his space these last few years. He continued his passion for working in the yard, as an amazing artist & landscaper who could always find just enough space and color to add one more flower or shrub. To maintain his memory, he continued to read medical journals and began taking several bible study courses. His daily meditation consisted of reading the Bible and Daily Devotionals coupled with taking meaningful notes on the edges of the book or on his notepad. Longtime friend of Bill W. where he continued to enrich other lives through his encouragement. He will always be remembered for sharing his love with everyone, his genuine community impact and true gift in helping others. "Doc" is the beloved patriarch of his family defining courage, strength, compassion, laughter, generosity, patience, humility thus leaving an authentic loving legacy. We were fortunate enough to be one of the families who had Dr. Halberdier care for generations of their loved ones. He not only lovingly cared for us and our children, but also for all four of our parents as well as a brother and his family. We first learned of Dr. H through so many of the fellow Houston Firefighters who spoke so highly of him. Taking care of our family for over 25 years he was there for all of us through many difficult times in life. He was also always ready to celebrate the happy moments with us as well. He felt more like a family member than just a physician, often sharing exciting stories with us about his family (who he was so proud of). He always entered the room with a smile, and gave each patient as much time and care as they needed. There will never be another physician like him. He was not only a great doctor, but a good friend and a wonderful man who we feel blessed to have known. We wish his family God's peace and pray that the years of wonderful memories that they created with him will help them through this difficult time. God Bless you Dr. Halberdier.

We have known this amazing Dr. and friend for over 30 years. He first diagnosed my Mother-in-Law with Alzheimer's. He was such a caring person and it saddens us that we've lost him, but does our heart good to know he is with Jesus>

All my prayers and thoughts go out to Stayton's family. He was a Great guy. We went to high school together in Kingsville. My Mom also passed away with complications of Alzheimer's which is very difficult to watch, it robs a loved one of the things they love, and the people who love them. He is now "whole" and resting in peace. RIP Stayton
