John Avery Obituary

John Sargent Avery died in Boulder on October 23, 2013. He was 89. A service will be held at Boulder Friends Meeting House on Upland Ave., Saturday, December 28th at 10am. All are welcome. John Avery was born to Walter and Dorothea (née Schneider) Avery on Oct. 4, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Adelphi Academy for 12 years, followed by Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He came to Colorado with his wife Sarah Binford (Binnie) Avery and their two children in 1951. Following military service, the family moved to Boulder where he took a position at the Boulder Medical Center. He and Binnie, now with 4 children, moved to Kalmia Ave in 1954 when it was still a dirt road. John Avery is remembered for his years of service as the physician for many Boulder residents, for his care of Navajo and Hopi children afflicted with tuberculosis, and for his love of music among many other things. He died peacefully at home; he was predeceased by Binnie, his wife and companion for 56 years. He is survived by two sisters, Margaret Smith and Virginia Avery, a brother-in-law, Holly Smith, four children, Tom, Martha, Elizabeth, and Sarah, two in-laws, Russell Guyver and Jessica Avery, nine grandchildren, Andrew, William, George, Robert, Jonathan, Henry, Julia, Katie, and Lucy, as well as by many friends.

Hello:

My name is Mark Stephens and my Father was the Executive Director of the Boulder Medical Center from 1980 - 88 - John S. Stephens. I am bringing up this guest book because with the few memories of Dr. Avery I have and with the enormous impact he had in my Fathers life - it is well worth the investment.

Unfortunately, my Father passed in February of last year but I remember during the 80's how much he looked up to Dr. Avery and how he saw him as a fantastic mentor and advisor. I knew Dr. Avery was a special very special man.

I have recently come to possess the clip of the 2 January 1982 clip with Dr. Avery in it regarding the lawsuit at the Boulder Medical Center.

I wanted to give tribute to Dr. Avery...my father loved him enormously and I remember admiring him and respecting him as a little boy.

Hopefully someone in Dr. Avery's family will read this and contact me my information is below:

The Avery's, along with the Cooks and Bradleys, were some of my close neighborhood friends. I remember Elizabeth being quick to remind me when I would refer to her Dad as "Mister Avery" that it's "Doctor Avery". Even at that age I could feel the respect she had for her father. I last saw Doctor and Mrs. Avery when they showed up at my dad's celebration service after he passed. It was a delight to see them as it could have been 35 years since the last time prior. My condolences on your loss.
