Eugene “Gene” Lennox Whiting ATHENS, TENN.- Eugene “Gene” Lennox Whiting passed away April14, 2016 at his home in Athens, Tenn. He was born July10, 1935 in Kingston, Ulster County, N.Y. Gene was the son of the late F. Leland Whiting and Frances Lennox Whiting of Glenford, N.Y. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan Whiting and a granddaughter, Shelby Whiting. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Stephanie Johansen Whiting; daughter, Marie and her husband, James Gasser of Lineville, Ala.; son, Eugene F. Whiting and his wife, Kathy of Palm City, Fla.; son, Glenn Whiting and his wife, Connie of Riceville, Tenn.; son, Randy Whiting and his wife, Julie of Orlando, Fla.; and son, Eric Whiting and wife, Dawn of Athens, Tenn. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one sister, Eleanor Arold of Kingston, N.Y. A former resident of Glenford, N.Y., Gene was the president of the first graduating class at Onteora Central School in 1954. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a former member of the Glenford United Methodist Church. He loved to tease and he loved to laugh, even if the joke was on him. Most of all, he loved his family and his Lord. He will be cremated and there will be a Celebration of Life in Athens, Tenn., on Sunday, May 1, 2016.
