Edmund Podgorski Obituary

Edmund Podgorski, 89, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at his home in Rotterdam. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Adele, in 2009, a day after their 57th wedding anniversary. Ed was the cherished son of Janina and Chester. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1946 after which he was accepted into the General Electric Apprentice Program. In 1950 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he proudly served as a medic in Korea until 1952. He then returned to General Electric where he worked as a machinist in the turbine division for more than 40 years. He retired in 1989. Ed was the loving father of four children, Marcia (Ned) Hirsch of Rockville Centre, NY; Carol (Michael Carroll) of Scottsville, NY; Janine (Roland) Guilz of Guilderland, NY; and Ed (Carolyn) of Flemington, NJ. He was also a very proud grandfather to six grandchildren, Alison (Peter) Garofalo, Hillary (Brian) Leary, Lindsay (Thomas) Tresansky, Andrew (April) Guilz, Rachel Podgorski, and Jason Podgorski. He was great-grandfather to Lucas and Adelynn Tresansky.Nothing brought Ed greater joy than spending time with his family and friends. He looked forward to every holiday and had special fondness for those with Polish traditions. He loved hosting parties and cherished his role as bartender. He also loved weddings and New Year's Eve parties and any other occasion that gave him the opportunity to dance. He and Adele loved a good polka, a Polish waltz, and the jitterbug. Ed enjoyed traveling to new places and often reflected on his fond memories of his trips to Florida, Alaska, Phoenix, New York City, and his recent trip to New Orleans. He enjoyed many pastimes, including bowling and fishing, and his favorite summer activity, golfing at Western Turnpike Golf Course. One of his greatest joys was playing a game of golf with his son, daughter, grandsons and son-in-law. Ed was a loyal fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants, and he faithfully filled out his March Madness brackets and participated in the "Podgorski Cup" fantasy football league.Ed was a lifelong parishioner at the Church of St. Adalbert where he attended grade school, later served as an usher and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Young Men's Polish Association, the Polish American Vets, the Rotterdam Elks Club, and the GE Apprentice Alumni Association.Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 8:15 a.m. from the DeLegge Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 9 a.m. at the Church of St. Adalbert.Interment will be in St. Adalbert Cemetery.Calling hours will be at the DeLegge Funeral Home on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Contributions in Ed's memory may be made to the Church of St. Adalbert Restoration Fund, 550 Lansing St., Schenectady, NY 12303 (http://parishes.rcda.org/churchofstadalbert/) or City Mission of Schenectady, 425 Hamilton St., Schenectady, NY 12305 (http://citymission.com/).Visit deleggefuneralhome.com.

Ed,
How has it been 5 years already? The Yankees need you, despite Aaron Judge. And we need to explain why we have become Padres fans: things like this happen when you are not around to keep us in line.
Thanks for giving us Carol (and Mike), who are such fabulous people, and with whom we cherish so many memories of you.
Love ya, pal.

Ed,
You join us on our walks and during our dinners. We trust you enjoyed the World Series and the NFL playoffs. We'd love to know what you think of BA and TB12! Let us know. And, boy, was there a boatload on TRMS! Much to gab about. We'll being the food, you provide the booze.
We will love you always.

We still talk about you all the time, friend. Always with smiles and vivid, happy memories of your humor, insights and laughter. We miss you but are happy that you are so alive in our hearts. And: who knew that ARod would do so well on ESPN?!
We'll talk to you on Feb. 14 and on Opening Day.

Being with Ed was always the highlight of our day. He made us smile and laugh, and we usually gained a new perspective on the world. When we asked him what made him tick, what kept him going, he replied with that unflinching directness and his matter-of-fact way that it was his pride in his marriage to Adele and in his children and grandchildren. We will cherish his memory forever.
