Mary Myers Obituary

Mary Liberatore Myers entered peacefully into eternal rest on Sunday, October 31, 2021 with family by her side, in the love of God's peace and mercy. Mary was born in Schenectady on June 7, 1925, the daughter of the late Carmine and Carmella Liberatore. Mary graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School with honors. She also graduated from Schenectady County Community College with a Bachelor of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Degree with Honors in May 22, 1988, which gave her much happiness. Being a parishioner of St. Luke's Church was extremely important to her. Mary was employed at the General Electric Company in Schenectady, NY working in the secretarial pool for the office of the Vice President. She kept this position until getting married and starting a family. In the next chapter of her life, she did part time work as a "Kelly Girl"; nevertheless, she was called upon to work almost daily for five years at the former St. Clare's Hospital because of her efficient and accurate work ethic. She started working in the Personnel Office, but helped fill vacancies in the Executive, Nursing, Purchasing and the Fundraising Offices of the Hospital. One of her greatest contributions came as she was employed by the St. Clare's Finance Office where she was called upon to prepare detailed financial statements. Of equal importance in responsibility, she finally ended her career working on a part-time basis for Dr. Gerardus Jameson, Chief of Medicine where she assisted with "Medical Grand Rounds" secretarial management functions. A consummate learner seeking new challenges, Mary studied the Italian and German languages, where she was compared to a "Philadelphia lawyer" because she asked so many clarifying questions, to make sure she learned each language perfectly. Mary's interests included keeping abreast of politics, donating regularly to Veterans organizations, Special Olympics, and homeless services. She supported the Schenectady Light Opera and served as an usher at Proctor's Theater and the Stockade's Civic Playhouse. She served on the League of the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra coordinating receptions for the Orchestra for many years, which she described as the "tinsel in her life." Mary traveled all she could in her later years, taking a Mediterranean trip, touring the island of Capri, and later traveling from Germany to Rome and Florence with her son, David. Mary also traveled to Monaco, Barcelona Spain, Majorca, Berlin Germany, the Rhine River, Copenhagen, and Sweden's "Tivoli Gardens, and Russia. Mary also loved seeing the United States, with trips to West Point, Colorado Springs, and Mount Rushmore being some of her favorites. What she learned visiting these destinations, and her from her jobs, and "dipping her toe" into the arts and politics, formed Mary's belief that one should always keep learning for the rest of one's life. Mary is survived by her sister Bernice Igo, her daughter Karen Malcolm (husband George), son David Myers (wife Nanette), grandsons, Mathew Myers, Patrick Myers (wife Jeanette), Benjamin Myers (wife Vanessa) and five great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Monday, November 8, 2021 at Bond Funeral Home, 1614 Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady NY from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon with prayers at 12:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will follow at 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Church, 1241 State Street, Schenectady, NY. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery on Kings Road in Schenectady, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to The League of the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the aides, nurses, housekeeping and recreation staff at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center for their kindness, caring attitude and respect shown to our mother. My fondest memory of Mary is David brought her and his sister to visit to our home in Virginia. As we all set on the deck we had wonderful conversations and she showed her humorous side which was delightful. We all shared a light lunch and it was time well spent.
