Michael Edward 'Moose' Smialek GreenwichMichael Edward Moose Smialek, 65, of Greenwich, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 22, 2013, with his wife by his side following a short illness. He was born January 7, 1948 in Schenectady to Marian and Joseph Smialek. Mike received a B.A. in English from St. Michael's College in Winooski, VT in 1969. Following his graduation, he served in the United States Army. He had a long, successful career in the food service industry, beginning as a sales representative for H.J. Heinz and Company. Following that, he was a regional sales manager for Standard Brands and then worked as a food broker for various independent brokerages including Hot & Cold, Don Sommers Associates, Paragon, Crisafulli Bros./United Food Service and Mid State Food Brokers. He then went to work for Kellogg's as a senior market manager and retired from Kellogg's in 2012. Mike enjoyed fishing, golfing, and travel with his wife, Karen, as well as time spent with his friends at deer camp in Victory, VT. Mike was an avid reader and had a quick wit. Mike is survived by his wife, Karen Teal; his former wife, Jane Smialek of Greenwich; two children, Johanna Smialek (Jason Hockford) of Greenwich and Christian Smialek of Richmond, VT; and five grandchildren, Maxwell Gobin, Maya Gobin, and Aidan Smialek Hockford, all of Greenwich, and William Smialek and Peter Smialek, both of Richmond, VT. He also leaves his sister, Elizabeth Smialek (James Dickershaid) of Niskayuna; his stepsons, Ryan (Kate) Teal and Andrew Teal, both of Melrose, NY; a brother-in-law, Edward Kopyc; two aunts, Louise Percenti and Carmella Smialek; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Saratoga Hospital, especially Rachid Daoui, M.D., and his nurse, Sarah, from D-1 who provided exceptional care and compassion. We are also immensely grateful for the help, dedication, and care provided by Deb, Wendy, and Diane of Caring Hands Home Care. At Mike's request, there are no calling hours. The family will be celebrating Mike's life at The Michael Smialek Memorial Food Show to be held on October 5, 2013, at 3 p.m. at the Smialek-Teal residence, 114 County Route 52, Greenwich, NY.
