Stephen Thayer Obituary
Stephen was born on July 19, 1931 in Holden, Massachusetts to Paul E. Thayer of Grey, Maine and Virginia Smalley Thayer of Dover, New Hampshire.
He grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts and graduated from the University of New Hampshire (Durham) in 1953 with a BS and in 1958 with a MS, both in Poultry Science. Stephen attended UNH through ROTC, serving in the US Army from 1954-56 at the rank of First Lieutenant. He was a long-time resident of Duanesburg.
While Stephen began his career with Beacon Feeds Company, he worked as a biologist for Sterling Winthrop Research Institute (Rensselaer) from 1963 until 1993, retiring when the Institute closed. He loved the news, all sports, especially the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, and his family's summer home in York Beach, Maine.
He is predeceased by his wife, Ruth M. Thayer (2010) and his daughter, Elizabeth Anne Thayer (1967).
Stephen is survived by his daughters, Susan J. Thayer (Guilderland Center) and Janet M. Thayer, son-in-law, Donald M. Doynow, M.D. (Guilderland) and his three step-grandsons, Daniel M. Doynow, Michael E. Doynow and William J. Doynow. He is also survived by his brother, Clifton Thayer and his wife, Dorothy (Marshfield, MA) as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his brothers, Edwin C. Thayer and his wife, Helen (Baldwinsville, NY), Paul E. Thayer, Jr. and his wife, Barbara (Warren, MA) and Walter Thayer (Dover, NH) and his sisters, Harriet Thayer (Worcester, MA) and Grace Taylor and her husband, Harry (Concord, NH).
The family sends thanks to Loudonville Home for Adults and to Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, to Dr. Steven Simmons for working so closely with Stephen to preserve his eyesight, and to Community Hospice for its exceptional care and attention to Stephen's dignity and comfort.
Services and burial at the Schenectady Memorial Park, Rotterdam, will be at the family's convenience.
