Helen Calhoun Obituary

A Celebration Remembering the Life of Mrs. Helen Curry Calhoun, 65, of Alpine, will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Clint Walker officiating and Rev. Mario McDaniel Delivering the eulogy. Interment will commence immediately following the service at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. There will be a public viewing for Mrs. Calhoun on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 from 3-7 p.m. at S.M. Goodson Funeral Home. Professional services entrusted to S.M. Goodson Funeral Home and Crematory-Talladega. Born on February 2, 1958, in Talladega, Alabama, Helen was the daughter of Arthur Curry and Eva Lou Swain Curry. From an early age, she embraced a strong faith in God and was a lifelong member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Later in life, she embraced a new spiritual journey, attending Kingston Missionary Baptist Church alongside her husband, Reverend Curtis Calhoun. Helen received a Bachelor's degree in Rehabilitation from Talladega College. Her dedication to her craft and lifelong learning led her to further expand her knowledge, earning a Master's degree in Elementary Education from Jacksonville State University. Mrs. Calhoun embarked on her teaching career at Talladega County Training School, later joining the faculty at Stemley Road Elementary School. For many years, she imparted knowledge, inspiration, and kindness to countless students, leaving an indelible impact on their lives. Beyond her commitment to education, Helen's heart was captured by her husband, Reverend Curtis Calhoun. Their love story grew and flourished, blessing them with two children, Curtis and Naquisha. Helen's unwavering love for her family knew no bounds, as she would often be found fishing on the banks or simply cherishing precious moments spent together. She also sought solace in shopping and being engrossed in a good book, treasuring the gift of relaxation these activities provided. Mrs. Helen Calhoun, a devoted wife, beloved mother, esteemed teacher, loving sister, aunt, friend and cherished member of the community peacefully entered eternal rest on January 8, 2024, at her home in Alpine, Alabama, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 65. Once making her grand entrance through those pearly gates she was reunited with her parents, Arthur and Eva Curry, brothers, Arthur Curry, Jr. and Henry Curry, and sister Lavern Buie. Mrs. Calhoun's memory will forever be etched in the hearts of her loved ones including her devoted husband, Reverend Curtis Calhoun; son, Curtis M. Calhoun; daughter, Naquisha Calhoun; brother, Arthur Perez Curry; sisters, Elsa Houston, Debra Liggins, Shirlean Tuck, and Pearlie Dutcher; two aunts, Cornelia Chapman and Dorothy Smoot; two uncles, Zach (Rosezina) Swain and John (Lucy) Swain. Her extended family includes Jessica Swain, Monika Morris, Jahali Swain, Kevin Peters, Jr, Janaysha Morris, and Kamory Morris. Additionally, she leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who were touched by her compassionate spirit and loving nature. In remembrance of Helen Calhoun, let us celebrate her life, her passion, and the love she shared with all who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be dearly missed but forever cherished in our hearts. S.M. Goodson Funeral Home and Crematory Talladega Sheffton M Goodson 256.480.3177
